Best Practices for Writing LDAP Aware Apps?
Saqib Ali asks: "I am in a process of writing a web application, that makes quite a lot of transactions with the LDAP server. I would like to find out, what are the best practices in encrypting the traffic from the web application server to the LDAP server. I understand, I have few choices: SSL, TLS/SASL (supported by SunOne/OpenLDAP), and the traditional STUNNEL. Any ideas, on the best way to provide encryption? . What is the value of 'encrypting everything' and cost of encryption (encryption is process intensive)? I would also like to locally cache the data I receive from the LDAP directory. Are there any solutions for doing that? Or should I just cache the data in a SQL database running locally on the WebApp server?" -
Six Sigma-fying Your IT Department?
Saqib Ali asks: "These days all the major corporations are looking at Six Sigma methodology to improve their processes. I am planning to take a Six Sigma Green/Brown belt class in March. I work for the IT department, I have a statistics background, and I've studied statistics in university as well. I can understand Six Sigma being used in Production/Manufacturing facilities, but it is hard for me to figure how to apply Six Sigma in IT. Are any other readers using Six Sigma methodology for IT? If so what are some of the things that it can be applied to? As part of the training class, I have to come up with an idea for a Six Sigma analysis project. Though the project doesn't have to be IT related, but I would like it to be, so that I can see its application in real life. Any ideas for the project?" -
Mozilla + CSS + XML = Structured, Formatted Content
Saqib Ali writes "Publishing XML content on the web requires some heavy processing on the server. There are many publishing framework (AxKit, Cocoon, etc) available in the market. However they are very CPU intensive. Apple's Internet Developer has a article on how to use CSS along with your XML content to render the formatted content in the Mozilla Web browser. It is very interesting read, especially for people who want to start creating content in XML, but don't want to invest in a expensive processing server/application. They have a nice example of RSS feed (XML) formatted for publishing in the browser." -
Tomcat/Cocoon Performance on Production Sites?
Saqib Ali asks: "A Tomcat/Cocoon setup can be used as a framework for publishing XML content. I have this setup running in testing environment for about 5 months now, and would like to move it into production. Is anyone using a similar setup and can comment on Tomcat's ability in handling the load from a production environment, or should we look at other Java Servlet engines like BEA, Jetty or Resin? If Open Source solutions can't work under these kind of pressure what should we be looking at in terms of different commercial solutions for publishing XML content?" A similar question with respect to Tomcat and Jetty was discussed in this previous discussion. What effects does using Cocoon have on Tomcat-based environments? -

WYSIWYG Editor for DocBook DTD Content?
Saqib Ali asks: "This week I saw a demo of the Tagless Editor by i4i. The editor is a plugin to Microsoft Word, which can be used to create XML based content. The plugin can handle various custom DTDs. However it can not properly handle the DocBook DTD. I was wondering if there is any WYSIWYG XML editor that can be used to edit DocBook DTD based content? Any ideas?" -
Using the DocBook DTD for Internal Documents?
Saqib Ali asks: "These days, most of the Linux Documentation is created using DocBook DTD. I was wondering if it will be useful for a large Enterprise to create Internal IT documents using DocBook DTD. Any success stories where a large enterprise converted all of its internal IT documentation to DocBook, with management's support? Any other things/issues to keep in mind before embarking on such a mission?"
