Mac OS X Bitcoin Stealing Trojan Horse Called OSX/CoinThief Discovered
An anonymous reader writes "SecureMac.com has discovered a new trojan horse for Mac OS X called OSX/CoinThief.A, which spies on web traffic to steal Bitcoins. This malware has been found in the wild, along with numerous reports of stolen coins. The malware, which comes disguised as an app to send and receive payments on Bitcoin Stealth Addresses, instead covertly monitors all web traffic in order to steal login info for Bitcoin wallets." -
Mac OS X Update 10.3.1 Available
Milanek writes "Mac OS X Update 10.3.1 is available via Software Update. It includes both security updates and it should also address problems with FireWire 800 drives." Apple recommends that you update your firmware updates for your FireWire / Oxford 922 / firmware 1.02 drives, even with the fixes in 10.3.1. The update also includes fixes for printing, WebDAV, and FileVault. TiVo writes "SecureMac is reporting that Panther's FileVault does not securely delete the files after encryption." Anyone know if this is fixed in 10.3.1? -
Panther Problem Roundup
An anonymous reader writes "SecureMac has posted an advisory on Mac OS X 10.3 Panther's screen lock. Apparently, to a limited degree, keys being pressed before the authentication window pops-up are sent to the currently logged-in user's environment. Note: Security Update 2003-10-28 version 1.0, which was released shortly after the advisory's release, does not fix this issue, but rather a hole in QuickTime for Java." Another anonymous reader writes "A problem with Panther has been found with external FireWire drives, that causes FireWire disk partitions in Panther above 137GB to be shown as corrupt after a reboot, in most cases being entirely unaccessible and unusable." And as a public service to all you mail rebels, I found out -- for me, anyway -- how to send email under Eudora without crashing. -

MacScan Detects Spyware
limpymac writes "MacScan public beta was announced to the public short minutes ago. MacScan will detect, isolate and remove spyware on the Macintosh. Currently it will detect trojan horses and keystroke loggers without a hitch. The application is for Mac OS and Mac OS X and is created by the folks at SecureMac.com. I found a keystroke recorder on my Macintosh I installed a year ago and forgot to remove; hah, I have a year's worth of logs!" -
Mac Security Feast
Justoc writes: "Wow, over the past few days there has been so much programming, porting, etc. in the Macintosh security world. Today MacintoshSecurity.com opened their site to the public allowing people to submit and discuss mac security news. Chevell of securemac wrote a nice piece on firewall security for OS X using freeware and shareware software. And Merilus ported over their Gateway Guardian and FireCard so it is supported by Mac OS X!""Firewall software for the Mac OS:IPNetSentry 1.1.6 is out, along with the open firmware password configuration program (ya its like bios, but for your mac). Freaks Mac Archives put up a few titles on a groovy new layed out site including a Def Con 9 T-Shirt for those cold nights. And Apple's been updating their OS X security advisory page with patches, papers and more. Eat up and enjoy."
