Here is one - Service Employee International Union.

Re:How I see it...
"obamacare" will RAISE the health care costs for average family of four by over $7K from 2014 to 2022.
If the $18.23/person/month price increase means health insurance companies will have to actually pay to treat their paying customer's medical bills, instead of immediately canceling the insurance policies of the majority of those who start costing them money, or capping their benefits at a few thousand per year and forcing them to max out their credit cards, mortgage their homes, and go into bankruptcy ("Using a conservative definition, 62.1 percent of all bankruptcies in 2007 were medical.") when they actually get sick, it will be MONEY WELL SPENT.

Re:Who Cares?
This has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Seriously. Stupid. Moronic. This "information" had to have come from Fox.
First, understand that Unions are self-funded. They're funded from dues paid by the members. They don't take anyones taxes.
Likewise, pensions are largely funded by contributions from the employees. I know, I was a member of government union. Yes, the government chips in a portion as well, but only to a certain point.
While people that are high up in the ranks may get a 6-figure pension (I doubt it though), 99% of the rest of the union employees don't. And what money the do get comes largely from their own contributions, interest and investment gains.
Fox news pretends that pensions are entirely funded by taxpayers, and that's simply not the case. Most Public employees pensions end up less than $30k per year.
http://www.seiu.org/a/publicservices/fact-check-on-public-sector-pensions.php
Finally, Public Employee Unions taking over OWS? Seriously? Where do you get this shit? Oh yeah, Fox. If you had spent any time there, you would know that this to be flat out wrong. What is the motivation exactly for a PEU to do this? There was absolutely nothing there in the interest of a PEU, either for or against.
This Is just ridiculous. and you're a fucking moron for believing it and worthy of ridicule.

Re:Does *any* industry start a new union anymore?
Wrong. Look it up, almost 1/2 the union is public service employees.
http://www.seiu.org/our-union/
The other large fraction is healthcare workers. Private property service workers like you describe only make up 10%.

Re:Does *any* industry start a new union anymore?
Fact-checking myself: SEIU has 1.2M healthcare, 1M public sector (mostly government) and a few hundred thousand property mgmt staff. http://www.seiu.org/a/ourunion/fast-facts.php#en

Re:Those disgusting proles!
As I look around I see tea partiers trying to lower the oppressive tax burden...
What oppressive tax burden? Taxes are at historical lows and are lower than comparable developed nations.
The rest of your claims are similarly disconnected from reality. Economic experts agree that the problem with the economic stimulus was that it was too tiny, thanks to right-wing opposition. The majority of U.S. debt is owned by U.S. citizens, not by China; and China holds only a little bit more than Japan. No "shovel-ready" projects involved the SEIU, since SEIU is a service industry union, not a construction industry one. Etc., etc.
If you choose to remain ignorant of basic political facts, please choose also to remain silent in the political discourse. Thanks.

Re:When opinions overshadow facts...
China cannot stop buying dollars in the short term even if they want to.
Not sure how that part works, but I will concede the point. You obviously know more about it than me.
Won't happen any time soon. The dollar is the world's de-facto reserve currency.
Gold used to be the de facto currency, and coming off the gold standard didn't derail the world. I don't see why dropping the dollar would. Of course it would screw up the US in a major way, but it wouldn't be a global catastrophe.
Which interest rate, out of curiosity, are you referring to? Currencies don't have interest rates.
No, but central banks do. Interest rates affect a lot of things - demand for the currency for a start. Why do you think everyone was borrowing money in Japanese Yen (at almost 0%) to invest in New Zealand Dollars (at around 6%) until a few years back? These carry trades are a simple way to make free money. Raising interest rates causes people to prefer that currency, as investors usually seek out the highest rate of return - of course there are other factors (like political and economic stability). As an individual or corporation with a lot of money to park, my duty is to seek out the best rate of return for the least risk. Before the answer was almost automatic - US T-bills. But now with the American economic and political system in doubt-?
I have no idea where you got this idea or what you are referring to. I'm pretty sure the US banks have a very good idea who they have loaned to.
Don't take my word for it. Why do you think Bank of America halted all foreclosures? Out of the kindness of their hearts? Because they want to do good? There is a serious problem here - if people are allowed to get away with not paying their mortgages the economy will fold. And if banks are allowed to take away people's homes without providing the necessary documentation, well I don't want to think about that, either.
No one invests in T-bills to get a big return.
I agree. Risk is proportional to reward, and T-bills are supposed to be the least risky of all. However T-bills today actually provide a negative return when you account for inflation (and not that government-massaged number the US government pushes out as inflation, REAL inflation). Why should I exchange my money for a piece of paper that guarantees me a loss, backed by a government that does nothing but print more money (accelerating inflation and destroying the value of the underlying currency) during the time my money will be "locked up"? Plus, why should I buy T-bills today when interest rate expectations for tomorrow are for increased rates? It makes more sense to wait (or buy short term notes).

Look at the Video and hear the other side
You might find that there are two or more sides to most stories when critical thinking and 2 sec of research are applied:

Re:Holy shit?
In eight states and the District of Columbia, insurance companies are allowed to deny health benefits to victims of domestic abuse, as it is considered to be a pre-existing condition.
I don't care what side of the table you're on politically. That's just plain wrong (doubly so if you call yourself a Christian)
With regard to TFA, don't forget that all of the usual medical confidentiality laws will still apply, and that it's fairly common for the school nurse to check the blood pressure, pulse, eyesight, and hearing of each student on a yearly basis. Far more information is collected via this "mini-physical" than anything that a HRM can collect. Also don't forget that it seems highly improbable for the school to take the time to archive this data, given that they're forced to run with so little overhead as it is.
(Yes, this was covered on
/. yesterday, though many of you might have missed it, given that it was posted to Idle) -
I Disbelieve
I can find no evidence that anyone is denied coverage for preexisting conditions based on the fact of being a victim of domestic violence. I welcome it, if it exists.
I followed the links from here to here to here and finally to here. No evidence is given.
What seems to be the actual case is not that anyone is excluded for being abused, but that some people are being excluded for actual health problems that were CAUSED BY domestic violence.
So according to what these people are pushing for, if you are in a car accident (through someone else's fault), you can be excluded for preexisting conditions based on those injuries; but if you are beat up by your spouse, you can't be. I disagree with this approach. If you are going to get rid of preexisting condition exclusions, just do it. Don't try to treat some preexisting conditions as somehow special, moreso than others.

Re:It's about votes, not pandering.
Amen.
There's a rebirth of social organization happening in this country. Unions like SEIU are finally throwing off the stale leadership of ineffective labor coalitions and are taking charge themselves. They're doing this by building leaders within their own ranks who are politically savvy and tuned into what power is really about.
And it's not just labor that is waking up. Faith-based community organizing is really taking off. Groups at the state level are engaging in serious power politics. And the right is taking notice. You know you're making an impact when an opposition group calls for a "<Name of your group> Watch."
This ain't your daddy's "Christian Right." The religious right is essentially a group of patsys co-opted to advance a conservative economic agenda. When you look at the actual issue campaigns of the religious right, almost none of the went anywhere. The only victory they might claim is a set of state constitutional amendments to ban equal unions for GLBT people. But even that was motivated by election politics, not the values underlying the issue itself. The religious right was and is being used by the conservatives. They're starting to wise up to that.
On the other hand, this new breed of faith activists is more than willing to take both sides of the aisle to task. There's a discipline to building public relationships with other people and especially with public officials. These groups and the new power-oriented unions understand what that is and that it is what is at the core of political power.
Interesting times, indeed.

FRAUD ALERT
Fellow slashdotters, please check out this guy's website before giving him any more help. Read it thorougly, do not simply gloss over. Notice the saturation of blue-collar propaganda, and the lack of any relevant details as to how the SEIU works. The SEIU is a cult.
The SEIU is, ostensibly, a union, and they do in fact unionize people. Like all unions, they have their share of corruption, money laundering, and influence peddling. However, what sets the SEIU apart from other unions is a singular pattern of coercive, manipulative, and undemocratic behavior towards their members, hostility towards other unions, and strict top-down financial and administrative control.
For documentation, please visit the Organized Labor Accountability Project Please compare the SEIU with the other unions listed at this link. I doubt you will find this pattern of cult-like behavior in any other union.
Local 32B-32J: Our union president... conducts general membership meetings in total violation of the LMRDA, our Local's constitution and basic parliamentary procedure. Mr. Fishman... refuses to open the floor for new business, refuses to take unrehearsed questions and refuses to open the floor to independent motions.
Local 32B-32J: ...on Sept. 11, the original primary day, many of the local's staff were forced to volunteer to campaign for mayoral candidate Mark Green. Staffers were allegedly forced to sign vouchers stating they were taking a vacation day so they can go campaign...
Local 79: [Employees] become union members only after working a probationary period of 100 events in a 12-month period. If a worker cannot work 100 events in twelve months, [he] must start over again... "The workers end up perpetually on probation."
Local 1212: In an effort to lure members away from the United Industry Workers Local 424, SEIU Local 1212... claimed to be the largest transportation union in N.Y. state... However, examination of the union's financial reports... destroy the claims. The report shows the union has only 5 officers and employees...[and] has only 94 members. And it is unclear whether any members are in the transportation industry.
CSEA: CSEA has refused to participate in SEIU's unity plan... which required locals to abandon their names and logos, and use the purple and gold SEIU banner. The unity plan also called for fees that would cost CSEA $18 million... Kenny summarized CSEA's complaints: "SEIU has disenfranchised CSEA."
Intercity Janitorial Services: SEIU began attempts to organize Intercity in late 1994. Intercity's president refused to sign... saying it was up to the workers to decide whether to unionize. SEIU's assistant director of organizing repeatedly warned Intercity... to sign the agreement or SEIU would attempt to drive the company out of business...

What does your site stand for?
This is somewhat off topic, but my question is what does your site www.seiu.org actually stand behind? Is there a page that clearly states your objectives? I see "current events", "get involved", "working family issues", but nothing that really states what your guys want and where you guys are going. This is only one
/.'s opinion, but it seems a little more time spent on your message and content might be worth more time then prettying/messing it up with Flash.
