Interview w/Jim Gettys
infodragon writes "Linux Power has a really good interview with Jim Gettys, one of the origional X developers and now actively involved with GNOME." He's also done much work with the handheld iPaq. -
Bonobo 1.0 released
infodragon writes: "Linuxprogramming.com has an announcment about the release of Bonobo 1.0. " The site has a nice list of the changelog -- I will say that Bonobo has gotten much more...stable over the last couple months. Grats to all who have been working on it. -
Berlin Project Lead Holds Forth
infodragon writes: "Here is a good interview with the project lead of Berlin. It is very informative and interesting, they talk about technologies such as gtk+, bonobo, corba ... If Berlin takes off it looks like X-Windows may have a competitor." That project head is Stefan Seefeld, and Seefeld gives good answers to questions like whether GNOME can or will be ported to Berlin, and how Berlin can hope to win converts from the millions of Xf86 users. -
Microprocessor Forum
Manufacturers are strutting their stuff at the Microprocessor Forum. Some of the rollouts: Turmoil writes "AMD has demonstrated working SMP. http://www.amd.com/news/prodpr/20165.html" hol writes: "German news site Heise.de reports that a German startup named PACT surprise-announced their processor design at the Microprocessor Forum in San Jose. Apparently this thing is a 128 cpu parallel computing deal which has its roots in the programmable gate array world." infodragon writes "All Linux Devices.com is running a pretty cool article about an X86 chip running on 1 AA battery. They demonstrated it by playing a VCD movie. They also say that mp3s can be decoded/played on it." -
RMS on the GPLing of Qt and More
infodragon sent us a Linux Today story by RMS [?] where he weighs in on the recent news about the GPLing of Qt. I'm sure that there will be a lot more about this over the week. -
KDE's Official Position on the GNOME Foundation
infodragon was among the many folks to submit the fact that KDE has an Official Position with regards to the recently announced Gnome Foundation and all the ruckus that followed. As usual, the opinions of the folks most directly involved are much more rational and realistic then the crazed fan hordes (and the following reactionary pieces in the mainstream media) that think there is some sort of war going on instead of healthy competition. Quote: "Q: "How much does creation of GNOME Foundation affect KDE development?" A: "As much as the birth of the last baby polar bear at the Quebec City Zoo" (i.e., not at all) " -
Reality On The "Purchased" Linux Reviews
infodragon pointed us to a Penguinista article which does a very good job of addressing the issue surrounding the recent complaining by Tucows and ZD-Net that Linux reviews are bought instead of earned. It says pretty much exactly what I feel about the whole thing. -
Linux on S/390 Gaining Momentum
infodragon sent us a link to Open Source IT's story about Linux and the S/390. Not normally considered as sexy as some of the developments as Itanium and such, Linux on the S/390 has garnered a lot of attention from companies and is doing a great job of legitimizing Linux for many large companies. -
BioWare Porting to Linux?
infodragon wrote to us with the news that BioWare is going to be porting games to Linux. Linuxpower has an interview with them talking about porting Neverwinter Nights, and /possibly/ Baldur's Gate 2. I promise I'll be good if they port BG2. I promise.
