Re:decaying credibility metric?I visit Slashdot, but I'm skeptical as to whether the true spirit of the original site will persist.
The ideas and expressions that once comprised geek culture have changed so much that the original Slashdot themes of individualist strength and moral integrity in the face of monopolistic powers will probably be cast aside in favor of a more contemporary populist sensibility.

How to write tiny applicationsPresently most Unix applications are written in C for portability reasons. In reality, C programs have to modified when ported from one Unix to another, unless something like GNU autoconf is used. Assembly has the advantage over C of being extremely fast and tiny.
A well-written tutorial about writing BSD assembly application is FreeBSD Assembly Language Programming. There is also a Linux Assembly Programming Resource Site. I suggest if you hate bloated software to contribute to solving the problem by writing small utilities in assembly. Of course, C remains the choice for large projects, but assembly has it's place.

Re:Mandrake... and linux viruses
Bliss and Staog are the first two known Linux viruses. Of those, I believe only Bliss has been found in the wild. They both seem to suffer from a serious fertility problem though.

Re:familiarity... rootprompt is all custom code
Rootprompt.org is all new code and written in PHP. However, slashdot has influenced a *lot* of websites, and several complete weblog packages. Recently I made the mistake of assuming that Technocrat.net was based on an early version of slash. I later learned that it was based on squishdot. Heck, lots of stuff looks like slash nowadays. (I have since corrected the error, as is suggested by the "updated" date

Re:Heh!... or try _this_ solution instead...
Someone posted this on Sitereview.org this morning. It does look like a viable solution to giving out your email address for a particular transaction. The service is pretty new and I haven't tried it yet. Has anyone had any experience with these people?
