Re:LOL, Cinemas not showing a film?
I wouldn't say brainless, it's like working and stressed. They do think about things, it just happens to be it's too many things and they can never relax.
Or is it like pop music now - only good for children?
It's made for the record execs. That sugarcubes vid has been on mtv for uh... too long for me to... accidently see it several times, the blatant sexuality to it is quite the thing, and I mean these chicks are targeted to low low (girl) ages. (the rapvids with 2 dozen 99% naked chicks in them each are for the boys) (does this give me a promotion?) (The group's brand new single, "Push The Button," was premiered on BBC Radio One in August 2005 Oh, only then? *Add something here which nicely blends into* got skank?) -
Zeus ZXTM
Our web site serves about 3 millions pages a day on two gigabit links. The balancing rules are quite complex since the content is splitted on multiple servers and SANs. We use software load balancers: Zeus ZXTM on Gentoo Linux. The nice thing about software load balancers is that you can easily replace the hardware if it fails. Having a spare PC is way cheaper than a spare load balancer. We are very pleased with ZXTM so far. Very reliable, fast, and very flexible. It uses a PHP-like scripting language to process requests and you can really handle any specific backend architecture with that.

Pay for ad blocking (Slashdot solution)
I'm working for Skyblog, a popular french blog service.
The service is totally "free", as users don't need to pay anything in order to create their blogs.
But our web site is crippled with ads. Popup, pop-unders, megabanners, skyscrappers, Overture contextual ads, flash ads (with sound) and other annoyances...
To be fair, the user experience without an ad blocker is horrible. Maybe not for Internet Exploder users that never saw recent web pages without ads. But when you are using alternative browsers and ad blockers for ages, you really get a shock if you see the site without any shield.
However, these ads is what is paying my salary, my colleagues' salaries, the hardware and the bandwidth. Nothing else. Only these ads. The business model fully depends on ads. Without these ads, we would have to charge for every blog.
I think the best thing to do is to go the Slashdot way. You want to use the service free of charge? You get the ads.
You don't want any ad? Pay a tiny fee. This fee is enough to keep the service up and running, you don't see ads any more, and you don't violate any contract.
The Slashdot subscribtion mechanism is really a clever idea.
Ad blocking is not fair. Because some people don't know how to install software, they have to watch more ads to balance other people who know how to install ad blockers.
On the other hand, I can't imagine going to web site without Adblock any more. Ads are really too intrusive nowadays.
But if every web site could accept cheap subscriptions in order to remove ads, I would definitely subscribe. -
Re:Need more info
Bullshit.
We use MyISAM databases that are over 20 gigs with no issue so far (except myisamchk time...). -
Keep it simple and stupid
The most popular weblog site in french is Skyblog
.
It has almost no feature listed in this article. People can just write text, and add an optional picture to every text. The comment system is also extremely basic, with even no threading support.
So why is it so popular, moreover there are plenty of featureful competitors?
Probably because it's minimal, so it's trivial to understand. Weblogs are for people who don't want to learn anything, just publish.
And even Blogger is way too complicated for the average user IMHO.
Also, with a weblog, you just write the text and some script will automagically create the code. So why not make the weblogs produce correct, accessible documents ?
The usual complain of web site designers when you talk them about accessibility is "oh, well... too complicated to implement, I prefer Dreamweaver-made HTML".
With a weblog engine, once templates are properly designed, making the documents accessibles to blind users could be trivial. This is, IMHO, the main point of weblogs, CMS, etc.
But out of every weblog software compared in this document, I can see only once that produces accessible, XHTML-conformant pages : bBlog.
Why? Useless features are fun, but it would be nice to also focus on what a weblog could really bring over traditional sites.
