    Snap Server has a cheapish ($550) 40GB network server. These things get MUCH more expensive as you go up in size, though - I suspect that once the consultants convinced them that they had an "Enterprise Class Network Attached Storage Appliance" instead of a miniserver they decided they could jack up the price.

    But I bet it's hackable, like TiVo. Why not buy a cheap one and upgrade the drive?

    What's wrong with the Snap Server-type stuff? The usually plug into a hub and have a fairly quick boot/setup time, multiple RAID options, 10/100/1000 network support, SNMP, all the essentials.

    Take the Snap Server 12000, for instance: "Nearly 1TB for Less Than $15,000". That's right, 960GB for under $14,999! That should provide enough storage for even the horniest of geeks (for a few weeks at least).

    Anyone have any experience with these things? Good? Bad?

    Responding to self...

    Poking around a little, I found this:

    Snap Server supporting AppleShare, NetWare Bindery, SMB, NT Domain Controller, and remote administration.

    Also, less interesting, basically a plain headless PC box with drive bays. Axis Storage Server, from the same guys who make the self-contained network-attached web camera.
