What's old is new again
Or something. Crypto, by Stephen Levy, chronicles the first crypto war. Worth reading, for background, because this time, it's not "national security", it's kiddie porn and terrorists that are going to win if we don't give the Security Services the keys to everything. And, we should TOTALLY trust them to keep us safe.
Yeah, right.

Here's the TL;DR version...
As usual, Mr. Haselton uses many words when fewer would suffice. As a public service, here is his essay shortened to its essentials. I've tried to be as fair as possible to his main argument (which, really, can be summarized in a single sentence):
Facebook recently hired a PR firm to smear Google. The allegation was that Google created fake Facebook accounts so that it could crawl and index profiles. There is no evidence for these allegations. Regardless, would Google doing so really be a bad thing? It would violate the TOS, but could actually be a boon to privacy. The reason is simple: it would allow users an easy way to determine how much of the information on their Facebook profile is available to anyone with a Facebook account. Thus, this kind of indexing would empower users to make smarter privacy choices. -
Re:MIT ITS passwords, and Microsoft File Servers
I think there's a story about ITS and its passwords in the book "Hackers" by Steven Levy http://www.stevenlevy.com/index.php/other-books/hackers I can't remember for sure though... I haven't read it in a while...

Re:NewsweekThanks Steven. I appreciate your work. I found this article to be pretty fair. I would have liked to have seen some talk about KDE and better distinction between GNOME and Nautilus, but that's not very realistic given the space limitations. And the red arrows in the online version are cool. I had actually submitted this article to Slashdot, with a link to your homepage, but either it was rejected or somebody beat me to the punch.
PS. I can't wait until the new edition of Hackers is released! I've been looking for it for a couple years now.
