Not a new thing
Then there was a truly surreal follow up instance. Here's the summary: A professional TV news crew were in the middle of interviewing an Amtrak spokesperson about the photography policy, in which the spokesperson was saying that photography is absolutely okay but the interview was interrupted by a security guard coming to tell them to stop filming immediately as it is prohibited.

True enough
I'm not a planespotter, but when I found myself booked on a flight on a tiny two-propeller plane I was amused, and wanted to take a photo. So I did, as I was crossing the tarmac to get on board the plane.
Some bag thrower started yelling. It didn't register for a while that he was yelling at me, telling me I wasn't allowed to take a photo of the plane.
This was a great example of stupid security. First off, I was about to get on board the plane, so I was going to have every opportunity to explore it and take notes at leisure. Secondly, the airport had an observation deck, which was where I had just come from. The plane was in plain sight from the departure lounge, where anyone with a camera could have snapped a photo. -
Re:Oh goodie
I don't give a fuck if 20 guys with box cutters hijack this flight and smash it into a building, killing thousands of people, just so long as I'm not inconvenienced" instead?
LOL @ you dumbass. -

Re:What a terrible thingIt's more like
- I once had an elephant on my lawn. It isn't there now, but I (and my pepper) had nothing to do with it.
- I now think there are going to be rogue elephants roaming my neighbourhood.
- Every one of my friends, has some cure for elephants. One of them suggested pepper.
- People know when I've used pepper.
- So I can claim that my pepper is keeping away the elephants.
That's the arguement that supports Stupid Security

Try these shoes (no metal) and check out this site
I fly roughly every three weeks, and have yet to have any trouble! In fact, it seems to me that the TSA screeners are getting better about tech, not worse. You just have to tell them you have X laptop(s) and that you'd like to let the guys at the other end of the line finish up first before you send them through -- they'll understand, if they're nice people. As far as having to pack and unpack and whatnot, all you have to remove is your laptop. You can cram whatever else into your carryon (cell, iPod, PDA, whatever) and run that through, rather than emptying your bag out into a bin.
A very useful hint: If you are tired of having your shoes scanned, or being wanded down because of your shoes, try Ecco shoes. They're incredibly comfortable and well-made, and don't have any metal in them at all (at least the suede ones I have don't -- bug your local shoe salesman about it to be sure).
