Loki Announces Loki Hack 1999 Contest
Ethelred Unraed writes "Loki Entertainment Software has announced a contest where an elite group of hackers (in C++, that is) will be chosen to improve their port of Civilization: Call to Power. The winner will get a dual-processor Linux box as a prize. Take a look at their info page for more. " Thats a pretty crazy contest idea. They ought to give the winner a job. -
Old Folks Can Code, Too
Ethelred Unraed writes "Wired News has a story about how "older" programmers and engineers--over 35--are having difficulties finding work, even though their skill level is as high or higher than the young guns out there. " We've heard this numerous times before, but it's still an interesting, albeit strange, phenomenon. I would say part of it has to do with the lack of lives that many of the younger folks have (I'm including myself). What do you folks think? -
Connecting VGA-cards to TV?
stein asks: "Is it possible to connect a gfx card without a special TV-out to a TV? I was thinking of making a VGA-to-Scart cable and program the gfx hardware to TV compatible frequencies. Kollar's article seeks to explain just what IS going on, and where MkLinux is headed. " It's interesting to note that Apple isn't the only one to stop development on MkLinux - as we reported before, The Open Group also has ceased development. The article explains that the user community has been maintaining the port since then. -
Linux MP3CD Home Stereo
Klas Elmby writes "I have completed the building of a MP3CD player for my home-stereo. I hope this could inspire/help others to do the same thing. It is based on a Matrix Orbital LCD-display with keypad interface and ... yes, linux. " Now that is what I want for Christmas! The RIAA needs to back off so we can all buy these things. With 9 gigs hard drives. Imagine not having to rummage through mountains of CDs to find that perfect track. Update the other link died fairly quickly. Klas has since moved the pages here.
