Re:Again, WTF?
Would someone kindly explain why it's "apt-get" instead of "app-get"? what's with the 't'?
It's because apt is short for Advanced Packaging Tool, not some play on a common abbreviation of application. It's also in the name of the graphical installer: synaptic. And less kindly: you could have found this out by googling apt: first hit is the Debian APT howto, second hit is the wikipedia entry for "Advanced Packaging Tool".
And as for the complaints about the command-line: the command line is not there to be intuitive, it is to enable you. It is about multiplicity, not single-click single-purpose single-minded ease of use. If you want to use it, learn it. If you can't be bothered to learn it, don't bitch about it.
I can think of multiple reasons why the tool wouldn't be called install. For one, it's too generic and would clash with about every other purpose. Do you want to install a new VMware virtual machine? No? How about installing a new device driver then? No? So maybe you have downloaded an RPM installer file and want that installed? No? Oh, you want me to search the Internet for a program, download the latest version, and then install it on this machine?
The only true gripe I have seen in this thread, is that there is no single command "apt". It's silly, because there is no overlap in instructions for apt-cache and apt-get. All others simply boil down to "I want the computer to divine my intentions from the way I touch the keyboard".

Re:Gore is for carbon creditsand what does this have to do with anything?
Your repetition of lame right wing talking points, that's what. Say a coal plant would have to spend $5,000,000 to make a 20% reduction in emissions. But what if they could make an equal reduction in total emissions by buying $1,000,000 worth of Prius's? That's what carbon credits are for: reducing total emissions by allowing polluting companies to improve their infrastructure over time, and getting us moving on the path to a greener economy. Wow, you're a complete right-wing tool. The corporate "left" (Right-wing Democrats) love carbon credits because they don't actually hold anybody accountable and the rich can buy up the cheapest-to-offset offsets up while the poor are stuck forgoing all difficult-to-turn-renewable uses of carbon.
It's regulation the rich can get on board with.
Did you not understand the critique in the original post? I went into much more detail in my blog:
http://swoolley.org/blog.cgi/carbon%20offsetting%20is%20a%20ruse
In that post, I even talk about how to fix carbon credits to be more fair and thus something I could get behind that won't fuck over the poor, but until then, carbon credits are a corporate ruse, and you bough them, hook, line, and sinker.
Pat yourself on the back, brainwashed idiot. -

Re:The best tools stay out of the way...
My blog tool stores itself in text in a format/markup that looks presentable as raw text, but then prettifies it into xhtml for the web. It displays the latest blog post via finger, even. http://swoolley.org/blog.cgi?get=src. It's text editor friendly and I have a shell script http://swoolley.org/files/editblog I use for doing the actual posting, although I never really bothered finishing it because it was so easy to use. To me, the best content-management or source-code-management system is ssh, a versioned filesystem, screen, and kibitz, unless the project is huge, in which case, probably git.
