Re:YouTube will eventually die.>People like me who make their own videos hate YouTube because it recompresses the videos into FLV format at an extremely low bit rate.
Right on. It would be really nice if they offered better quality downloadable versions of the videos in addition to the quick streaming Flash/Shockwave/whatever crap. That's one reason i frequent archive.org's video collection moreso than anywhere else. If you first want to quickly see if something is any good you can download/stream heavily compressed realmedia or mpeg4. If you decide you like it (and maybe want to even add it to your media center or burn a disc) they have mpeg1 (vcd quality) and even mpeg2 (dvd quality) versions available of most things.
For another example take a look at Systm, the online technology show. They offer their episodes in H.264 Quicktime, Theora, Windows Media, XViD and even available over bit torrent to take the strain off their servers. IMHO, this is the kind of online programming that will endure. IMHO, the flash stuff is best suited for previews and short clips that are mildy amusing.
Maybe Youtube just wants to save on bandwidth, but for sites that are serious about delivering video content they should really step it up a notch. We're not on 56k modems with 640x480 15" CRT displays anymore.

Re:video on the web
How about I wake up and try that again.
I am continually surprised to have never seen this implemented in online video. Not only for ads but for data other than the video stream.
Videos such as the ones in the flashy new h.264 codec or others.
Command N, Systm, Diggnation, Debcon, and Others.
Titles, credits, links, etc. are all shown encoded into the video. There must be a better way. Flash encoded video may have an answer already but I have never seen it implemented. QuickTime may also have a solution but again I have never seen it.
Has anyone done this? Is anyone pushing a standard? Fancy having a computer being interactive.. -

Systm's Video How To
Systm had a video how-to of building a MythTV box. Having seen the short segment (and having assembled a PVR before it), I am surprised that the article is "Part 1."

P2P Television is here
I think we are on the cusp of the P2P Television era. I have been watching http://www.thebroken.org/ and http://www.systm.org/ . Two really great Tech shows. My only real bitch about P2P TV is that there is no organization. Does anybody do a website about P2P TV content? Were the hell are all the pirates that take a lousy VCD quality cam of Batman Begins and turn it into a somewhat watchable DVD? They should be distributing content on P2P and the other.... thing... Use... something or another. But back to my point. This is the 1940's/1950's of P2P TV. Now, one of you web monkey's, get out there and code up a site!! Get the word out, so we can choose. 1) Set up a website about P2P Television 2) Come up with a catchy name for said site 3) Organize video distribution and editing on things like Use... something or another 4) Get sponsors 5) Profit!!!! Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Re:Finally Slashdot Video can start
Snif, I still miss Slashdot Radio. But now, thanks to this technology we can get Slashdot video.
Check out Systm.org.
The first episode, Build a Wireless Camera Detector, was interesting. Building the box. Then driving around looking for people's X10 wireless cameras, especially security cameras. Sneaking around and whispering at 2AM.
The second episode, Build your own MythTV box, sounds interesting, but I have not seen it yet.
We will be able to see Cowboyneal and CmdrTaco getting it on in one great geek lovefest on geek subjects.
I'm bittorrenting the 2nd episode as I write. I've only seen the first episode. But I must say that these guys are probably better looking than taco and cowboy neal, who are all grown up now. -

When is thebroken episode 4 coming out?
After several weeks of lawyer negotations with G4 (my 9-5 job), they have agreed to release me from my contract. Friday May 27th 2005 marks my last day on the G4 network. That means we are focusing on thebroken / Systm FULL TIME! We are starting to plan the next episode of thebroken now, and we'll send out another update as we get closer to the release! Now that this is our full-time job, expect to see many more video releases coming your way!
