Don't bite a hand that feeds you.
I still don't understand why RIAA is so anti-radio. Okay, I do understand that they try to protect the authors and collect fees, but without the radio (any form, radio, webcast, etc.) nobody will hear the music. I would not buy music that I haven't heard. Would you? If they want to profit, they must give up their law suits and let radio and webcasters play whatever they want. That's how people hear the music and then buy it. People tend to buy what they like, and I do not think that all the past law suits against radio stations made associations like RIAA and people behind it very popular. Tag's Trance and other small webstations were closed as a result of their actions and that makes me want to stay away from buying music.
P.S.: and if your music doesn't sell, well the problem is not with the people who listen or broadcast it. -
It's A Shame...
I'd suggest you point iTunes to the stream at Tag's Trance, but the CARP legislation got in the way

Streaming audio
Maybe you'd want listening to online mp3 broadcasts... Almost all online radio stations have forums to discuss what's on air and such; pick up a station you like and you'll see what's playing, and what other listeners like. I suggest:
DigitallyImported (probably the most popular; trance, hard trance, house)
Massinova (eurodance / trance site in which users decide what will play next, with a moderation system for the tracks...)
SomaFM (oops, killed by CARP -- had good Drum'n'Bass)
Tag's Trance Trip (trance -- wait, off the air due to CARP)
XTC Radio (trance and prog house)
Philosomatika (goa and psytrance)
Bassdrive (drum'n'bass)
Xanu (Chillout and lounge) -
Danger, Danger, Tag Robinson...
Tag's Trance Trip [tagstrance.com], one of my favorite internet radio stations of all time, just went down.
Danger, Tag:
The intro page is still there and has a bumper. Tag probably needs to take that down, too.

This is already hitting us...
Tag's Trance Trip, one of my favorite internet radio stations of all time, just went down.
We'll probably see a lot more stations go down. Underground internet radio and offshore stations will be all that's left.

Re:You just can't win
Actually, in Rochester, the Zone is a CC station and they don't play that crap. They do play crap but not TRL crap. A lot of Weezer, Linkin Park, and the likes of angry young men who scream a lot. The DJ's are funny, they seem to go against the norm when it comes to radio, some are vulgar and loud, more so than normal radio DJs. Maybe it's new radio, I don't listen to radio that much seeing I am constantly tuned in to Tags Trance... Good net station, trance

Re:Of course there's the most obvious way to benef
I've fallen sucker to this marketing technique over and over again.
Just a few years ago, I had never heard of trance. Tag's Trance came on the scene, got me hooked with shoutcast streams of incredible music, and now I've got a shelf of Sasha, Digweed, Oakenfold, etc. that I've spent over two thousand bucks on.
Yet according to the RIAA, nobody who has a broadband connection and can pull streams buys music anymore. They're dying to kill off shoutcast broadcasters with absurd new requirements.
Incidentally, no broadcaster in my major metro or any nearby in this part of the country plays trance. I guess the RIAA would rather trance artists die of obscurity than admit they're wrong?

Some of us simply can't wait.
Okay, time for a slightly different point of view...
I live in Europe; consequently, we often have to wait months or even years before we get series or movies I'd like to see, like 'Star Trek Enterprise' (fortunately, sometimes they get it right, like with Lord of the Rings).
So you can imagine that I'm quite happy with the current distribution of these series through the Internet. Not because I'm a pirate who doesn't give zit about the actors being paid, etc., but because I do not live in the US and that is only reason I have to wait so long. Ridiculous.
Occasionally I listen to MP3 radio streams from across the globe, simply because I like the music. And that's how it should be, what IMO is one of the futures of Internet: being able to tune in to any radio or televion station that I like, and not being restricted to 32 crappy TV stations on a crappy cable, half of which is spoken in languages I don't speak, or filled with uninteresting content.
Considering the recent surge (and downfall) in Content Control Systems (yes, that's control, not rights, as in Digitial Rights Management, as if you had any rights.... hah!) I doubt a legal, pay-per-episode system is out of the question anyway... So its either TV-napster, or waiting for a long time... It doesn't make me less of fan.

Re:good concept, marketing plan isn't there yet
ok. i've got proof they're going to go dot-bomb. after posting my suspicions, i decided to conduct a highly scientific marketing study... i called my boomer dad.
me: dad, you hear about that satellite radio service with 100 channels going live?
dad: no, really?
me: (scribbling down note about how boomers don't know what we slashdotters do) hmm. ok well, imagine a radio service with 100 channels you can listen to in your explorer.
dad: sounds neat (jot down use of boomer word 'neat' to refer to something of value)
me: yea, let me read some of the channels they've got. (rattle off some rock, talk, classical, etc.)
dad: sounds great. i'd probably listen to that. how do i tune it in?
me: oh, well, that's a minor issue. you have to buy a new radio for your truck.
dad: oh. they can't get it on mine?
me: no, different frequencies. but the radio is only $300.
dad: you've got to be kidding. that much? for a radio?
me: well yea, but it gets 100 channels. and it's only $10 a month...
dad: $10 A MONTH?!?!?! forget it
me: (scribbling down how they've got the right programming for the wrong market. gen-x'ers i've chatted with would gladly throw the money /if/ it had programming of value)
so attention marketing dudes: you are waaaay off. your programming is for a market that wouldn't free up a spare dime for your service.
now that's off my chest, you guys owe me ten years of service with tag's trance on 24x7. get going!

did you know cows like trance? true! -
Re:To be the devil's advocate here...
Yes, last time I checked, I thought ShoutCast and Spinner.com et all were doing a great job. Minus the lag. Minus the packet dropping and switching. Minus the advertisements.
hmm, you might want to work on your bandwidth. I listen to streaming audio all the time, and yes, there are some weaker signals, but finding a strong one isn't too tough. The one that I've been on lately (TagsTrance) has been flawless, and that's been tested with over 12 hours of coninuous listening. And I've YET to hear an ad. Live365 is another good place to find quality streams.
