Examining Microsoft Update
eggsovereasy writes "The Inquirer is reporting that a group in Germany has deciphered the information sent to Microsoft during an update using Windows Update and says that information on all software installed on your computer is sent, even that which is not Microsoft's own software." The original article is, unfortunately, pay-per-view. When you open up Media Player it sends information back to Microsoft like what movies you play, what songs you listen to and where they come from." -
First Benchmarks of AMD Hammer Prototype
porciletto writes "As seen on Ace's Hardware, this article features Quake 3 benchmarks comparing an 800 MHz ClawHammer sample to Athlon MPs at 800 MHz and 1667 MHz, as well as a Willamette Pentium 4 (256 KB L2, 400 MHz FSB) at 800 MHz and 1600 MHz. The benchmark results indicate a 40% performance increase over an Athlon MP for the ClawHammer. Additionally, the 800 MHz ClawHammer manages to tie (actually outperform by 1 FPS) the 1667 MHz Willamette Pentium 4." -
Philips Says Compact Discs Can't be Copyprotected

Apparently, they don't like the audio CD copy protection many record companies want to enforce in the future. They break the CD-DA standard and therefore are not allowed to use the logo. As a conclusion, Philips' next audio CD copier will be able to detect and probably circumvent the copy protection of audio CDs." This article is Auf Deutsch but the fish does a tolerable job of making it sane for those who can't remember the proper gender of all their nouns. -

Pentium IV Problems?
zottl writes: "German tech site computerchannel.de has an article about various problems concerning Intel's Pentium IV. It says that the new processors will draw lots of power (66 watts for the 1,4 GHz version), need special copper-core coolers, might need radiation shields for the socket pins for ECC compliance and will remain expensive for quite some time. It also says that the P4 will only get mass-market appeal with the introduction of the slimmed-down 0.13 micron version. Oh, and best of all, it seems to be slower for certain apps than a P3 of the Mhz. Seems like a repetition of the problems the P6 architecture had when the Pentium Pro was first introduced" Isn't this pretty much what they say about every generation of Intel chips when first released? Anyway, the article is in German, so you'll need to feed it to the fishy until translations crop up.
