Re:You think LA is bad??
Modern vehicles make it harder for vehicles to get out of tune, and when they do it alerts the driver, but comparing a pre-cat '60s car in good shape with a modern one will not result in a difference of that magnatude.
an '85 emits almost 38 times as much CO than a '01
Just one example.
I agree on the out of tune part. Basically, I was stating something from an old study that said that getting rid of $500 junkers would do more to reduce pollution than upping car standards again.
That's why it's so much dirtier in CA today than the '70s? The cost diffrence of all emissions gear is probably less than the required airbags. Perhaps you should also complain about safety features killing people because they make people drive old cars more.
Polluting or not, safe or not, you can only keep a car rolling for so long before it becomes cheaper to buy a newer one. And my point would be that a modern car without airbags would still be safer than one from the '70s.
Basically, I'm arguing that any pollution reduction program should look at multiple factors - one being that a softer standard met by more people can be better than a stricter standard followed by fewer. -
Re:Heads should roll!
According to this the Supreme Court ruled that the execution of persons who committed their crimes while under the age of 18 was unconstitutional. That it was a violation of the 'cruel and unusual punishment' clause of the 8th amendment. Also according to the same article; China, Iran, and Pakistan also execute minors. We weren't THAT lonely on that list...

Re:A380 is a gamble
FYI dozens of international airports have started to upgrade to welcome the A380.
Yes, I have heard that JFK, LAX, etc.. in the US are ready for the A380. What about the 100's of international airports that are not? The 747 basically defined size requirements for airports around the world. Billions have been spent meeting those requirements over a 30 year period. The new A380 requirements require capital improvements that won't be made overnight, if ever.
Additionally, the cost of the "gamble" has already nearly been covered by all the firm orders (more than 150 A380s have been ordered by fifteen different companies.
Laudable, but the break even point for the A380 is widely quoted as 250 and is probably much more.

The Lack of Women
The lack of women in the computer programming field really is one of those oddities. The 2002 survey says 1.1% of FLOSS developers are female. That's less than the portion of women in construction. The construction field definitely has discrimination against women and extremely commonly has a hostile work environment.
By contrast, there's no clear reason why women shouldn't be in CS. The most likely possibility is still that it's a cultural norm, but that doesn't exactly explain why more women would be involved in construction than in CS. It might be a hostile climate, but I would be surprised if the male coders are more aggressive and sexually biased than the average guys on a construction crew. It's really quite a strange situation.

"Currently, women workers make up nearly 10 percent of the construction industry or more than 900,000 nationally"
