Re:Or they could build nuclear plants
Many people think that only Luddites could oppose more nuclear power because they're afraid of technology. I'm not afraid of technology, I'm afraid of the ineffectiveness of a handfull donut-eating security guards at each of hundreds of sites. Carefully read this and this and then think again about your plan to save a few German birds.

third world nukesWhen I read posts like the parent comment, I sometimes wish for additional nuclear proliferation. If the more of the third world got the bomb, perhaps they would all the sudden be our close personal friends like Pakistan is all of the sudden. Those nukes have sent more US aid to Pakistan than all the charity commercials on television.
Interesting perspective. You might find this article interesting; it goes into both the reasons Islamic nations should want to build nuclear weapons (international prestige) and argues the notion of such nations using nuclear weapons irrationally ignores the realpolitik motivations of most state leaders.

Re:Coal Waste Memorial
Coal waste isn't a problem in anything like the same way. Sure, CO2 emissions are a problem, but that's a political agenda I can hear you grinding at from here.
If you find an ancient cache of Pu, in a quantity small enough to pick up in one hand, it may well kill you. Coal spoil does none of this. That's why it's important to mark Pu as hazardous in a long-term manner, but coal can look after itself.
Sure, coal waste can kill - remember Aberfan - but that takes 1,000 ton quantities that any can recognise and avoid. For plutonium, we don't even know reliably at what temperature it will ignite.
