Re:Not everyone is an Apple whore
Care for a little Crunchpad/Joojoo?
Keep in mind that this thing was publicly confirmed LONG before the iPad. Even if you want to go back when the name was changed from the Crunchpad to the Joojoo, it was STILL publicly confirmed before the iPad.
And no, it is not vaporware.

Is there even a prototype?
The CrunchPad was supposed to be a dead-simple, cheap $200 tablet. Closer to production, it looks like it'll cost more like $500. A $99 device would be nice, but I'll believe it when I see it. A decent screen + NAND memory + battery alone will add to the cost.

Re:could you be any more dramatic?
Yeah, but you're presupposing that Apple is a fair platform
to begin with. I used to an Apple user for over 5 years but
I refused to stay with them after they enacted the "powermac tax"
where I had to spend an extra $1000 just to have a PCI slot. I've
been an exclusive Linux user for the better part of a decade now. You're right about the App store lock in, but it's not against
the law to make profits. Overall, I don't "get" the iPad and the
value proposition it's selling, it ought to cost half as much with
the restrictions that come along with it. It reminds me more of
a kindle than anything else. Vote with your dollars and try
to promote the JooJoo instead which seems to fully support Flash
and Java.https://thejoojoo.com/sites/specification
Also, the App store as it currently stands doesn't make up a
huge portion of Apple's current revenue but with the
introduction of this, the continued success of the iphone, and
the likely Kindle like integration for "songs on demand" for
the next gen iPod and support for the app store; the app store's
share of revenue will continue to grow with no limit in sight.http://seekingalpha.com/article/137873-a-closer-look-at-those-iphone-app-store-revenue-numbers

The JooJoo (formerly known as CrunchPad) looks better to me. https://thejoojoo.com/

Re:Should we give (l)users control?
First, the FSF needs to convince us average users need to have control. Why should average users have control over their computer? Isn't this what got us the virus nightmare in Windows?
Uh, because they bought the device? I think the burden is on the other side for taking away control.
I don't think Mac OS X will ever go away from giving you the control it does (and it is quite nice), but Mac OS X is not appropriate on a device like the iPad.
Why isn't OS X appropriate? What is the difference between this and an Air? I saw the presentation, the device sat between the iPod touch and the macbook. What is one OS appropriate and the other isn't?
In fact, I would compare the iPad to the upcoming yet-to-be-made Chromium netbook. The vision Google laid out for their device is pretty much exactly the same as Apple's vision of the iPad. Except that Apple is actually _less_ connected in to your device than Google would be.
"Google's doing it too!" is not a good argument.
Attacking Apple's products is one thing. Why not create your own open source tablet to compete, and let the marketplace decide?
Well, I'm sure it will: https://thejoojoo.com/, though the market doesn't always act rationally, and perhaps the FSF is trying to raise awareness about the freedoms people are giving up for Apple's style.
