I Carry a Purse.
Yeah, I said it. I hate having crap in my pockets. This let's me carry my wallet (without sitting on it), my phone, keys, sunglasses / regular glasses, a small hard drive (I always keep a complete backup of my personal data with me), etc. http://www.tumi.com/alpha/leather-travel-kit-114156/
This has had no effect on my junk or where I prefer to put it...

Watch the people who get on the plane first
Have a look at what the hard-core road warriors carry -- the folks with airline status that lets them get on the plane first. You'll see one briefcase/backpack brand more than any other: Tumi. Yeah, they're expensive -- $150-600 and they never discount 'em, but they're guaranteed for life.
It will take killer abuse, protect the contents, and stay good looking doing it. I've destroyed TravelPro stuff without ever checking it. My Tumi just gets that happy 50-mission look.
They also have ones that are more suitable for the civilized gender.
The best part is that it comes witht the little talked-about Tumi SpaceWarp(TM) technology. Somehow these suckers are smaller on the outside and larger on the inside than anything else I've used. I can't believe they don't mention this in the brochures.
Take care,

functionality
My dad is religious about his Tumi laptop case. It's not particularly cool, and it's a bit overpriced, but boy is it extremely functional. Every zipper feels right, it's very durable, and it isn't too bulky. What converted me was how nicely the handles have worn.

They have better looking designs, and I hate to admit I trust their brand:

You can't go wrong with a Tumi
Tumi is known more for its luggage, but honestly, I've never had a better laptop bag. Now, this will certainly break your bank (~$150-200), but it is worth every penny you'll save on your back (think doctor's bills). Go and try them on at any high end luggage store. They are excellent.

Tumi Bags
Get a bag from Tumi - they make some awesome, high quality products. Expensive, though. See Tumi website for details.

Tumi
Tumi is the way to go. I have an entire Tumi luggage set as well as loptop bag, card holder and portfolio. Very classy and made to last forever. They have a great warranty on their balistic nylon products. A little on the pricey side but they are the best quality you will find.

Best Bag I've Ever Had ...
... is a Tumi. Yes, they are much more expensive than the competition. Yes, they may not look like the flashiest bag with all the cool compartments in all sorts of places.
But, the fact of the matter is, you get what you pay for. Tumi spends an incredible amount of time & money researching typical usage patterns, wear & tear damage, and the types of storage compartments that people actually use.
I'm currently on Tumi bag #2 in my lifetime (I switched from a backpack to a saddlebag two years ago). All the pockets seem to be in the perfect place, there's no significant wear to speak of... the bag looks great & protects my laptop very well. I'll continue to buy Tumi for all my luggage as long as I can afford it.
Do yourself a favor & spend the extra dough.

Go with a TumiI use a Tumi Bethune.
Just the right size, great durability, and the padding on the back is nice and smooth so it doesn't abrade away your clothes. Beware of cases that can carry more than *you* should.Tumi is a little over priced, but the bag will last longer than your current laptop.

BrenthavenAs far as styles available, protection, and all the neat little storage comparments you could ever need, Brenthaven has about the best bags I've seen.
As far as price... well, they're cheaper than a Tumi, at least.

You need a better backpackI like *not* having an external antenna on my TiPB. My laptop constantly goes in and out of my school bag. I prefer not having to pay extra attention to a little peice of plastic sticking out in these and other such situations.
You need a better backpack bag. I have a Thinkpad with a Lucent card that sticks out, and I have never had an issue once I found my Tumi backpack. That bag absolutely rocks. It's the best made. Tough as iron, pockets sized to fit CDs/media, a handle on the top, a "file cabinet" pocket for docs and loose papers, and really comfortable straps.
The actual compartment that holds the laptop has a foam liner (which is removeable if you want to carry normal stuff) that protects the sides and bottom. There's about five inches in between the laptop and the top of the bag, so the Lucent card sticks up in the air and is nicely protected.
If you need a more general purpose backpack which also carries a laptop, then check out Tumi's other models.

Three optionsI used to travel with my laptop ALL the time, and I must have worn out three or four "high quality" backpacks before I found TUMI. They are definitely the best in luggage of this type and their computer backbacks are superb. Another good brand is TENBA. Other brands simple pale in comparison.
A final option is to buy one of those neoprene laptop sleeves that simply shield your laptop and can then be placed in any backpack you already have. This is very discreet and can be found at almost any travel luggage store for little money.
Be sure to buy something that isolates the laptop from the rest of the stuff in the pack and from the outside world. I've broken MANY hinges and latches on laptops ignoring this. I convinced my employer after many days of "lost productivity" to spring for the expensive TUMI pack for me.
A word of warning on travelling with laptops. On trips to Europe as well as in the continental United States, I saw many laptop thefts in airports and elsewhere. In airports, do NOT let someone get between you and your laptop for long. Wait until the last second before you step through the metal detector before placing your bag on the x-ray belt. Teams of thieves set up diversions to delay you at the security check while a cohort of theirs simply picks up your laptop bag at the end of the belt. While out and about, don't make the contents of your bag too obvious (like the Micron label on laptop cases). A friend of mine had her laptop stolen when the thief cut the strap of her backpack as she exited a bus. It happens so easily...
