Java News
Richard Cannings of Java-Linux.org to just tell us that the site is up and running now, and is the central repository for Java/Linux JDK ports as well as other neato stuff like JITs and Dox. We also have this link from Andy Tai where you can read about the java Lobby's attempts to create a Free Software java desktop and applications under JFC as a way to prevent java from collapsing into a dozen incompatible variations. -
Apache Gets Praise
Andy Tai writes "This LAN Times article praises Apache. It lists Apache's advantages, the biggest being flexibility to adapt to different environments due to the availability of the source code. Again a very good article on Free Software." -
Linux Mentioned at USA Today
Andy Tai writes "In this USA today artcle discussing the future of Microsoft Windows, Linux is mentioned as one potential competitor to overthrow Microsoft's monopoly." The article doesn't say anything that Slashdot readers don't know- but once again, it got mentioned in the 'Main Stream'. -
kIRC Devel Stalls
kIRC, the best looking of the new breed of X IRC clients has reached a halting point in development. Click the link to read Aaron Granick's announcement that he just doesn't have time to maintain kIRC anymore. His feelings are all to familiar to yours truly- ePlus development has all but halted as I am busy making mugs, slashdot articles etc. Anyway, read Aaron's message and maybe some of you guys are up to the task of picking up where Aaron is leaving off. RMS Speaks Against "Open"
Andy Tai wrote in to tell us that the first major notable person to come out against the term "Open Source Software" is RMS. Read more here. He says that OSS may get businesses, but the concept is more clearly expressed through the term "Free". He's correct, but I'll take a little bit of ambiguity if it means more market share for Linux, Netscape, and other Open Source products. -
Sun Pushes JavaSoft
Andy Tai writes " Sun is pushing Javasoft, its division in charge of Java development, to become profitable. This article analyze potential profit sources for Javasoft, which include embedded systems and consulting. Even though this article says Javasoft won't change its policy on JDKs, how will this pressure change Javasoft's bahavior, and how will this incluence Java on Linux, where Sun cannot expect to get significant license fees from, remain to be seen."
