New Hydrogen Storage Technique
pwp writes to mention that researchers at the University of New Brunswick are reporting they have found a new method of storing hydrogen gas. The new method is able to condense hydrogen gas into a usable solid under mild conditions. "Hydrogen gas is typically stored under pressure in large metal cylinders, approximately four feet high. These cylinders are heavy and expensive to transport. Since they are under pressure, they also pose a safety hazard. 'We've reached a milestone with our ability to condense hydrogen into a usable solid,' said Dr. McGrady. 'The next step is to produce a safe, compact storage system for the compound that is both lightweight and affordable.' The research is expected to produce reversible hydrogen storage materials that can be processed into a powder for use in limitless commercial applications." -
Software - Different Traits for Manufacturing vs Service?
tachin asks: "We've all been hearing about software as a service industry as opposed to manufacturing, there are some differences that favour that view, but I wonder if the type of industry affects the fundamental design of a software system. Considering the differences between those two types, are there some software constructs that are appropriate for one type of industry but would be undesirable for the other? As economies everywhere are becoming more service-oriented, what are the main characteristics a software system must provide to work well in such environments?" -
Corel Draw 9 for Linux Needs Beta Testers
Frank249 writes "Corel Draw 9 for Linux appears to be on or ahead of schedule. They are currently advertising for beta testers. This is a good sign and confirms what was reported in today's ZDNet Linux article, that the wine libraries are close to production quality." -
Looking for X Servers on WinNT
Martin Chisholm poses this query: "I have two computers for home use: a 486 Linux box and a P166 NT machine. I want to be able to run Linux programs and NT programs simultaneously. Since Windows was never designed to display things remotely, I have the monitor and keyboard on the NT box. I figure that running an X-Server is my solution. I have tried MicroImages MI/X, but I didn't like it. It was okay for xterms, but was lousy for graphical programs (such as XEmacs). I found VNC to be fairly slow, and it had some weird quirks. I am currently using StarNet's XWin32 demo, and except for the 2-hour limit, I am pleased with it. I have heard good things about Hummingbird's Exceed, but it seems pricy. However, before I shell out money, I want to Ask Slashdot the following: What is a good Win32 X-Server at a reasonable price? Or is there some alternative? Did I simply not give MI/X and VNC a fair chance?"
