Re:only winnerMitsubishi is going to have electric vehicles on the market soon.
Universal Electric Vehicle has the Spyder in pre-production stage.
Commuter cars has the little electric commuter thing that looks quirky but supposedly works really well.
Electric cars will be back in vogue sooner than most people think.

Re:only winnerThe early electric cars were also just plain ugly.

Re:This stuff is worth a lookSure. I have about $30,000 to splurge on a new car. I want it to use no petroleum whatsover. Can I buy one of these NOW? Thought so...
In a similar vein the Electrum Spyder is also "almost ready"... and yet I've been looking for an alternative fuel vehicle for three years and seems to have a solution. Milk cart-like 30mph things don't count as I commute to work on a highway.

Hydrogen sucksIt's not an effective way to store energy. Batteries are much better. Modern Lithium Ion batteries have energy density high enough to make all-electric vehicles more realistic. Announcements such as this one may cut "refueling" times of electric vehicles down to minutes, making them practical for long trips not just subarban commute.
Would you object to owning this as your next automobile? The future is bright, the future's electric. Remember you heard it here first.

Battery powered cars are getting 300 miles now.
It's linked from the front page.
You're right about it being a toy, it's there to prove range, performance and to make a bundle of money for the builders, sportscars have *much* bigger margins than mass manufacture vehicles.
Slightly more practical and comfortable is the UEV Spyder
EV UK have a load more information on electric vehicles.
My own petrol car only gets 240 miles to a tank BTW.

Re:good news for environment
Its not hard to hyperlink, but gimme a break it was my first post. Another car that looks promising is the Electrum Spyder Of course this is only a prototype but the production price is an etimated 35K.
