Running Linux Review
Running Linux, Second Edition
by Matt Welsh and Lar Kaufman
reviewed by hemos
Being a relative newcomer to the Linux world, I needed more assistance then one can obtain simply by reading Slashdot. Imagine my delight in finding/using Running Linux. The book will work for a variety of people , whether it be setting up Linux for the first time, or for those who feel more comfortable with Linux. The book's authors, Matt Welsh and Lar Kaufman, obviously understand Linux, and more to the point, the mentality behind the operating system itself.
The book was designed along with the fine folks at Red Hat and is available both with a companion disk, or separately. For someone just setting up Linux for the first time (and how many people haven't been converted ye t?) the first option is perfect. They can not only get a fairly recent build of the OS, but also have the knowledge base provided to them that will allow them to understand Linux in a non-threatening, and more importantly, non-frustrating way.
Because let's be honest here: most of us won't be buying new copies of the books, or at least rarely. And as well, most of us get our updates through different sources. But if we are truly committed to making Linux into a viable alternative for the world at large, we will need books like these, because we need to make Linux an understandable and workable alternative for the world at large, who aren't particularly concerned with which diffs have been issued and such. Running Linux is a step in the right direction--bringing it to the people at home, bringing it to where they live at. Running Linux is a perfect book for the introductory and med-level user. Get it at Amazon. -
Freshmeat
The best source for up to the second software updates is definately Freshmeat, and Scoop one-upped himself again with a very sharp new design. Very excellent looking, congrats to everyone who was involved with the rewrite. Slashdot regulars will be excited to hear that Scoop has agreed to let Slashdot run a sidebar with the last 10 releases on freshmeat- this should make everyone happy. -
Quake2 News
Razvan Jianu sent us a couple of tidbits. First, Linux Quake 3.13 is out. This was first mentioned on Freshmeat. Even cooler is a collection of New 64 Player Maps. Apparently a PPro 200 bogs down at 64, but it still will be fun to try! -
Slashdot Content Stolen
Well they say that immitation is the most sincere sort of flattery, but blatantly stealing isn't flattery, it just makes me irritable. It seems that Mr. Philip Saunders has decided to start stealing most of Slashdot's articles. Think I'm kidding? Check out this link to what philip calls "Lord Cyric's Linux "News" Page. The page basically takes all of my icons, and most of the better Slashdot articles, makes some or no modifications to them, and reposts them- after stripping out the names of Me and the other fine authors who write for Slashdot. After all of this, Phillip doesn't even Link Slashdot back. If you appreciate what I'm doing here, and think what Phillip is doing is tacky, send him email at p.saunders@agsm.unsw.edu.au and ask him to stop. Or at the very least, credit his sources.
Thanks to Scoop for alerting me to this. Scoop is the way cool guy who maintains Fresh Meat, the best source of Linux Software Update information.

RedHat chooses Gnome!
RedHat has announced the formation of a new department known as "Red Hat Advanced Development Labs" who will be working with the people of the GNOMEteam to advance a free desktop and many nice tools for linux. Here is a link to the announcement made by Marc Ewing at RedHat. Thanks to the folks at freshmeat for making me aware of this.
Can companies like RedHat continue to make money on Free software. I'm guessing that they can. What do you think? -
