AOL Still Working On AIM Security Hole
TeacherReviews.com writes: "According to this article at Newsbytes, AOL has been aware that users' screen names and credit cards can be stolen from not only AIM 4.3, but earlier versions of the instant messenger as well. This problem, which allegedly can happen to any AIM user, was first made public by Inside-AOL.com months ago, but AOL decided not to respond until this Thursday under increased pressure from Inside-AOL.com and other media." This is just the kind of news I could do without, having recently been persuaded to register with AIM and give GAIM a try. -
Bill Joy, ESR, RMS and more on SCSL vs GPL
Frank Sullivan writes "Upside Today has this excellent article on the relative value of Sun's "Community Source" license versus the GPL. Richard Brandt, an Upside columnist, wrote recently that Sun "doesn't get" Open Source. Bill Joy responded with an email saying that SCSL is less restrictive than GPL, rather than more restrictive. Brandt forwarded this to ESR and RMS, and a "frank exchange of views" ensued. Many interesting questions were raised, such as is the right to fork a bug or a feature? Well worth reading, if you're interested in the philosophy of source code licensing. " Wow. Well worth the time of reading. -

Linus Named in Upside's Elite 100
Gary Franczyk writes "Apparently Linus Torvalds was named one of the top visionaries in Upside's Elite 100 list of most influential people in the computer industry." He's the only "Visionary" that didn't get his picture on that page. So sad.
