Time to pick up that age-old flamewar? An Ethernet-enabled Atari port of the Contiki operating system has already been completed, and brings the Atari users telnet, e-mail, a web server and a web browser. Pictures and schematics for the Ethernet card, as well as screenshots of the system in action on an Atari 800 are available from the project's webpage." -

Statistical Analysis of Copyright Registrations
linuxizer writes "I've been poking around in Penn's Library for most of my Freshman year, looking up copyright statistics. What I found is basically what many suspected all along: extending and strengthening copyright terms has little effect on actual innovation. Perhaps most fascinating is the strong 40-year upward trend in registrations which is sharply broken in 1991 with a precipitous decline. Also included are some interesting observations about the RIAA's data. The numerous graphics should be well-enough explained that you don't need to go to the data files, but they are included if needed." -
Tight Security And apt-get: Trusted Debian Project
kcurrie writes "There is now a Trusted Debian project available. This release installs over a stock woody installation, and includes PaX (non-executable data section kernel patch), IBM stack smashing protector patch for GCC and a ton of recompiled programs (BIND, Apache, Postfix and OpenSSH included) that take advantage of this. Running 2.4.20, it also includes the latest Snort and FreeS/WAN support.

Coming Back Soon... The Tasmanian Tiger?
adoll writes: "Melbourne's The Age is reporting that DNA has been extracted from a 110 year old Tasmanian tiger (thylacine) bone. Scientists are now wondering if genes can be implanted into eggs of an existing species and born to surrogate mothers (numbat and Tasmanian devil are mentioned as possible hosts). The last tiger died in Hobart, Tasmania on September 9, 1936. It was believed the tigers were hunted to extinction (CD: Thems was good eatin) on Tasmania, but unconfirmed sighting have persisted to this day". -

joekool writes "Just saw the new Cringely article, and, well I can't remember ever hearing about this thing before, but the NUON sounds really cool--and it has to be the most multipurpose not-a-cpu type of chip I have ever heard of, as it seems to do everything from play console games to decode DVDs. "
