Re:Not as funny as you'd think
Will we ever see > 24fps in the movie theater? Possibly, but it's going to take some time.
Roger Ebert has been praising a system called Maxivision48 which is 48 fps (and can dynamically switch to 24 fps to save money).
Also, Douglas Trumbull's ShowScan system has been around for a while, but has only been used for a few specialty attractions. I've read comments that said that ShowScan was too realistic and not "cinematic." That reminds me of the CD vs. vinyl debate.
I've never seen either system. -
Ebert's opinion of Digital, and a new system
Roger Ebert has interesting things to say about it: MaxiVision48 vs. digital
-
Roger Ebert's perspectiveHe wrote an article. on the future of digital filmmaking a couple of years back, and echoes some of Alex Cox's points regarding quality. Ebert goes on to describe a new film-based technology called "MaxiVision48". It is essentially a process designed by film-makers (not studios) which looks much better than standard film or digital projection at a much lower cost.
MaxiVision48 can switch on the fly between 24 and 48 frames-per-sec and uses a new film advance mechanism to eliminate jitter. The result is a super clear rock-solid picture. I wonder what became of it.

Re:Ebert vs. Lucas
Hi Ray,
I think Ebert can say it better than I can:
"I have seen the future of the cinema, and it is not digital. How can this be? How can a technology that is a century old possibly be preferable to new digital gizmos? This is a story of the limitations of video projection, and the hidden resources of light-through-celluloid. Please read carefully. The future of traditional cinema is at stake."
And from ABC News:
"Noted film critic Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times has been one of the most vocal opponents to the new technology. At a recent industry trade show, Ebert implored theater owners not to ditch film for digital files since he believes digital projection has yet to match the best that film can do.
'In my opinion, digital does not look as good as film,' says Ebert. 'I am amazed at how oblivious most moviegoers are to picture and sound quality.'"
Ebert's no technophobe, and he appreciates digital technology in filmmaking. Just not on the projection end.

Roger Ebert Doesn't Like Digital Projectors
Here is the article by Roger Ebert about why he isn't a fan of digital projectors.
And to be fair, here is the response from a film maker in British Columbia. -

Roger Ebert on Digital Projection
Movie guru Roger Ebert didn't have much good to say about digital projection. Poor lightning, pixelated displays, washed out colors. To me it sounds like the problems I have seen with DLP projectors for the home. Thats why I went and got a nice analog CRT hdtv for my home movie viewing =) I think I will stick to nice analog film.

Re:In theory film is better-in practice, it ain't
Roger Ebert has been saying this for a long time. The link here points to a piece on digital projection.
I have seen the future of the cinema, and it is not digital.
No matter what you've read, the movie theater of the future will not use digital video projectors, and it will not beam the signal down from satellites. It will use film, and the film will be right there in the theater with you.
