Re:Product of the Year is bs...
yah - we laughed a bit about this award at times too. It won some other possibly cheesy awards (Like Linux World Show Favorite) - you can see them at http://www.vovida.com/pressevents.html . The real taste test is in the dog food. Several people here use it to run the telephone they use every day and like it.

Vovida: Free Stacks
Vovida has an excellent suite of GPL'ed IP-telephony stacks (H.323, SIP, Megaco, RTP, etc..). We are using them in our products.

Other open source sites for VoIP
Also check out www.vovida.com (I work there) who have put out several open source stacks for VoIP and a software phone that uses SIP and runs on Linux with a Quicknet phonejack card. Vovida has also sponsored a project to create an open source client like you want. It is at http://sourceforge.net/project/?group_id=5560 and the RFP is at http://www.sourcexchange.com/ProjectDetail?projec

Voice over IP pointers
Voice over IP isn't really mature yet, but there are usable implementations (both commercial and free). The main competing protocols are the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) created by the IETF, and H.323, created by ISO. SIP is much simpler and easier to understand, but H.323 has a lead in deployment.
Take a look at:
Internet Telephony for a very good overview of the issues and technology,
The Session Initiation Protocol page for SIP info and comparisons with H.323,
The OpenH323 Project for a free implementation of H.323, and
Vovida for a set of free implementations under development for both protocols. On the commercial side, Computer Telephony magazine has loads of information about VoIP and related topics, including a feature article this month about SIP. -
Open source: We love it.I work for Indiana University's Unix Workstation Support Group. As you can imagine, we use a lot of open-source software. There's no official policy about it, but the unwritten practice is to use it whenever possible. We compile OSS packages for all the operating systems we support and distribute them on our FTP site. Also, we support Linux. (In fact, I'm the lucky Linux support specialist.
;) ) Ah yes, and many of our campuswide production servers run Linux. ;)In October, I'm going to work for Vovida, which not only uses open-source software but makes it, exclusively. If you're interested in Linux telephony, you should check them out.
