Re:still looking for the applications
When the Perl script gets the data from the RPC call, the data will be available as a standard Perl datatype.
I've been doing this between PHP, Cold Fusion, and ASP (VbScript) for quite some time. See http://www.wddx.org. Very Simple, very Elegent. It just doesn't come with a kitchen sink - and that's fine by me. -
Re:xml
Communications between servers which should share similar information is nice, I have used it to update databases that are pretty much static from one side of the firewall to the other. WDDX is usefull for this and its a nice way to get things from one type of server to another (for instance an ASP based webserver to a ColdFusion based web server)
So as you can see, it has lots of real world uses.

I KNEW IT!When I read your post, I just knew I'd come across something that did what you want. Something that translates data structures between languages. Something with a 4-letter acronym where the two middle letters were the same. Xdds? no. Sddx? no. Damnit! I couldn't remember what it was called.
Now, two days later, I'm looking for something entirely different and my search leads me to a glossary page. That wasn't what I was looking for so I hit back, but for an instant just before the page was erased, I scrolled down and saw it in the corner of my eye:

Re:Agreed...
I understand the whole business/growth/decay side of things, but at this point, there is so internet application development work out there, there is really room for more than one (or ten) platform(s). There are some people out there that "require" a certain platform for their project...but there are just as many who don't care. For those who are not worried about how it works, but that it works, you just need to show them that you are able to do the work that they need done.
I am a ColdFusion developer...it just happens to be what I am using now. I have friends who are PHP (and a number of other platforms) developers. We are all making a good living developing with our tools of choice.
Maybe rather than fighting over which platform is "best", we could work on ways to make them interoperate...so that those who use a "lesser" platform can still do work with/for those that are using a "greater" one. It's really the data that matters...the rest is just for display.
Check out WDDX...makes it a lot easier to "syndicate" your data...(reasonably) platform independent. -
