CD Offline
I used CD Offline, a Windows based freeware for quite some time.
http://cdoffline.webz.cz/download/index.html
It is not polished and even has some spelling mistakes in the UI. But it does what it is supposed to do and I have not found any other alternatives. I have almost completely moved to Linux these days but manage to run it fine with Wine. I am looking for native Linux alternatives though. -

Re:Dont forget to check the Window Manager.
Yes, KWin (KDE's window manager) can run standalone. However, unlike most other WMs, KWin is a pure window manager, and does only that - it manages windows, and that's about it. So there's probably not much point in running it standalone, and most people need also panel, background, etc. (which are provided by other KDE components).
On a slightly related (in fact, opposite) note, one can try running other WMs with KDE. Currently not much tested, as somebody has to try it first for for real to find out the problems

Re:What about...True, some do re-encode their MP3s at higher bitrates. That's why you should avoid the secondary crowd, and go straight to the source.
See "An Analysis of Current File-Sharing Systems" for more information. IRC trading is the way to go. Branding is just as important in the piracy scene as in corporate America, and specific IRC channels are devoted entirely to single ripping groups.
Ever checked your MP3 comment fields? Most of mine, at least, are riddled with tags from ripping groups, claming credit for their hard work. EGO, CMS, or my personal favorite Team RNS, infiltrate recording studios and provide high-quality rips as zips. You can trust these groups to provide high-quality 192kbps rips, they must provide quality or face dimishining of their brand name. However, once the secondary crowd gets their hands on the perfect MP3s via IRC, they share on second-level trading networks such as FastTrack, OpenNap, Gnutella, Blubster, or WinMX. That's where the problem begins. By using a trusted source, one can easily get perfect copies of CDs online, several times easier than a retail store can provide.

Re:The cat is already out of the bag...
Everything worth getting is already available in MP3 format..And nothing thats currently being put out by the recording industry is worth listening to.
Are you implying only home users rip CDs into MP3s, and that if no one here buys a CD it will never appear in MP3? You're dead wrong, as groups such as RNS, EGO, REV, KSi, etc. get ahold of CDs before they are released and rip them for the MP3 community. I don't know about you, but I'm going to rely on these groups for my music.

Garmin etrex GPS
You can make your own serial data cable for the Garmin Etrex and write your own firmware updates. For the time being, people have been just changing icons, but there are some cool things to do. For example, I would love to take the very precise time internally (to the milisecond) and display it on the screen. Cheapest unit is $105 at amazon.com (or $110 at sportmart or $130 at thinkgeek)

PS: Too bad I'm getting some bullshit about "invalid formkeys" so I have to post AC. And too bad I typed a long explanation on SourceForge bugs and after 'submitting,' I was told to go and log in and my bug report was lost.
