Re:Germany
How long before someone packages up a Linux live CD with Skype preinstalled so that you can ensure you're computer isn't compromised when making phone calls?
Whatever makes you think that packaging Skype with Linux is going to make it more secure? Skype is proprietary and closed source, and security and privacy are both as strong as its weakest link. You can't see the source, you can't know how the protocol works, hence you're vulnerable to privacy invasions. No amount of bundling it with free software is going to fix that unless you use a free protocol and client to begin with.
I personally would prefer to see Wengophone really get off the ground instead, but it seems that the project is already dead.

Re:Skype-based SIP servers
I would use it if it works as a set-and-forget appliance that allows me to:
- Map a SIP extension to a skype account for incoming calls (SkypeIn)
- Create a dial plan such that dialing "4+number" calls through SkypeOut (as configured from my PBX)
- Create a dial plan such that international calls all go through SkypeOut (as configured from my PBX)
- Map SIP extensions to external skype accounts for skype-to-skype calling (the most important element)
Admittedly, I could implement the SIP-based GPL'd WengoPhone instead, but then I would lose the ability to call Skype contacts, which is the main point of this exercise anyway.
This would mean that our international calls all go through Skype, which would make them money. It also means we'd have paid for a licensed product that enables this, which would make them a bit of money and recognition; this would be a Skype-branded box in my server room.

the only real alternatives i see
are SIP or jingle (xmpp) based. since i there doesn't seem to be a stable jingle client (yeah coccinella, but it is ugly), i bet on SIP. gtalk doesn't count btw (win only, tightly google integrated).
and now tell me of the dozens of cross-platform (!) SIP programs you know. i am searching myself right now and only found wengophone [1] as a reasonable alternative.
please name the "more than enough" alternatives; i don't know them.

Wengo a Skype replacement? (Open Source, SIP)
The Wengo people need to hire someone who can help them communicate in writing. There are translation errors and other mistakes on their web site, too.
However, here is the question that is important for most Slashdot readers: Is WengoPhone a good replacement for Skype?. WengoPhone is open source and SIP compatible. -
What are your experiences? Wengo links.
Wengo is advertising itself as a Skype replacement. The free WengoPhone is Open Source and SIP (telephone standards) compatible.
Does anyone have experience with Wengo? Skype is excellent, of course, but not open source and not compatible with standards.

and the team: 35 people in France keeping you in touch."
Wengo started in 2005. "Wengo is a subsidiary of the group neufcegetel."
Confusion: It is difficult to find their telephone service rates pages. The one linked is for the countries beginning with B.
Debian Wengo: Package: wengophone (2.0.0~rc5-svn8108-2) "SIP-based software telephone with video and chat features."
Observations: Their web site is confused. The site is incorrectly translated to English in some places. -

Source code?
I don't see any way to download the source code for Wengo.
