Good trend + a related article
I got a warm fuzzy feeling reading that article. It's nice that I'm seeing signs of trend back towards getting back some liberties and that the gov't is having a hard time infringing on them. Somebody sent a link to
a related article
out across my office and its worth taking a look at. It has this same kind of theme. And there are people in congress that actually (believe it or not) seem to be intent on supporting this kind of decentralization... Actually, I can't tell you how reliable that news network is (anyone know?), but its still comforting to see that I'm not the only one who just wants big brother to leave me alone! -
UpdateAn update on the story is available here
."Each student in Louisiana, whether they know it or not, has a state student ID number. That number by default is also their Social Security number. Parents can object and require the school to use a different number."

Re:School Contact Information/Policies
"Found some more[23]Here This is the site of Rachel W. I belive she is the one that was intervied in the article.
:)"The seco nd story linked to there quotes Eric L. Green, the consultant the school had hired who had advised against using SSNs. I wonder if this happens to be the same Eric Green who is the frequent denizen of sci.crypt? Imagine that, a privacy-minded person being into crypto.

Boiling Frogs?!
"That's generally how these things start," said Dean. "It's a convenience or an efficiency and so on ... Before you know it, the frog is boiling."
It's here, at the very end of the page.
What the fuck is this intended to signify?! Holy jumping Jesus, they're boiling frogs now!
That's it. I'm outta here. This country is done for. Set sail for the Hollow Earth! Ahoy Vheissu, best regards to the Angel of Lübeck! Ahoy Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius! AMPUTEES ADRIFT!

They Can Remove the CodeIn this interview right here with the Principal of the school, he says that any student who is uncomfortable with the SSN on the badge can remove it or cover it up. What this has become is an issue of "I don't want everybody seeing my name." All Privacy Act and SSN Administration issues are null and void.
I was fully behind the kids on this issue until I saw that they're not being forced to display their SSN, and saw that many parties are upset with the idea that the school would want you to wear a name tag.
So let's see it for what it is: A name tag issue. You're telling me that people at your school aren't going to learn your name? Sorry, but names aren't protected under the privacy act.
High school kids look for issues to rebel against. It's part of the game. Now that it turns out that their SSN aren't being forcibly comprimised, let's not blow this thing out of proportion.

are you NUTS?!?!
"This is obviously no great move, but it's not too harmful either, because it says: [yadayadayada, blah, blah, woof, woof] So it will be within that context, like it says, and hopefully the Working Group won't say anything stupid about free speech." uh, that's Bubba saying that stuff, you know, the pathological liar who doesn't know what "is" means... Algore's wife started the RockandRoll censorship movement... looks like the Thought Police are gonna be a real Federal Agency by year's end. Don't take my guess as fact, I'm not Nostradamus, but do read this article and decide for yourself if the Great Lying Bubba really has your best interests in his plans.

Much better analysis by Alan Keys
I believe this is a much better analysis and quality of writing than the above attempt by Katz:
War's own peculiar logic
