Programs Cannot Be Uninstalled In Vista?
Corson writes "I am surprised that nobody seems to have mentioned this here yet. Possibly after one of the latest updates in Windows Vista, two strange things happened: first, the Uninstall option is no longer available in the Control Panel when you right-click on older programs (most likely, those installed prior to the update in question, because uninstall works fine for recently installed programs — the Uninstall button is also missing on the toolbar at the top); second, some programs are no longer shown on the applications list in Control Panel (e.g., Yahoo Messenger). A Google search returns quite a few hits on this issue (e.g., one, two, three, and four) but everybody seems to be waiting patiently for a sign from Microsoft. But the company seems to have no clue or they would have fixed it already. I am just curious how many of you are experiencing this nuisance." -
Mindcraft Study Validated
!ErrorBookmarkNotDefined writes "Another study has appeared validating the Mindcraft comparison of Linux and NT. This time, PC week benchmarked Solaris, Linux and NT. Using a monster machine, NT handily defeated Linux. The study found fault with Apache, mostly. (For low-end machines, Linux would easily beat all comers; but how far along is Linux in the highend market?) " -
Linux Advocacy Hurts
sundae writes "For those who are into Linux advocacy, check this little piece from WinInfo before you pointlessly brand any critizism as FUD, then attack the author and everything else related. This article criticize the way many pro-Linux sites, such as /., only whine about how the Mindcraft study was funded by Microsoft and ignored the fact that the study actually *did* happen. " My opinion is that the Mindcraft study is completely invalidated by using an optimized Windows box and a vanilla Linux box. Its that simple. I'm kinda bummed that this article fails to mention this, instead implying that the Mindcraft test was reasonable. But don't miss the point- we're our own worst enemy. I got CC'd on a lot of criticism of this report, some of you guys did an excellent job of fairly ripping the report to shreads. Others... well... didn't. -
Gates: "Linux Can't Compete"
An anonymous reader writes "Theres a curious little article at WUGNet, talking about a Bill Gates' speech on his new book, where he cites that Linux isnt viable because its openness. According to him, theres "no central point of control", and "Windows offers far more functionality and features than Linux ever will". So much for their Anti-Trust case. "
