Re:You can thank the corporate Dems for this too
The vote for the current maps for the state legislature was 65-47 in the House and 31-15 in the Senate. The House was 74 Republicans and 46 Democrats at the time, while the Senate was 35 Republicans to 15 Democrats. The Republicans have a veto-proof super-majority in both chambers, and didn't need or ask for the support of the Democrats.
As for the federal congressional maps, your premise makes no sense. In all but the most wildly tilted states (and NC is pretty close to a swing state), definitionally, gerrymandering creates safe districts for the opposition party (it's not throwing the other party a bone, it's the whole point; you make a bunch of safe districts for your party by making a few very safe districts for the opposition; you can't actually will the voters out of existence, just make sure that they can't elect as many of their preferred party). That doesn't mean the opposition party (in general) supports it; while the legislator being bolstered is surely happy, the party has obviously just lost several potential seats. Getting four 85% Democratic districts in exchange for nine 65% Republican districts is clearly terrible for the Democratic party; literally the only Democrats who benefit are the four Democratic congressmen, and they aren't the ones drawing the map (the state legislature does).

Re:variables that affect climate
North Carolina also famously outlawed scientific evidence on sea level rise because it negatively impacted coastal developers. Better to impact residents than developers I suppose?

Because this will be unlike Biosphere 2 how?
Because this will be unlike Biosphere 2 how?

They should have done it under water, if they insisted on Hawaii instead of Antarctica, which would have been a better choice (or at altitude on K2 or Everest, as long as it was a non-permanent installation). There's too much temptation to cheat, there's no real danger, and we already know that curing concrete will eat all your CO2 if you are stupid and don't seal it.
The only good choice fora Hawaii location other than "under water" would be "Inside a large SO2 cloud near a volcano, so that breathing the external atmosphere would get you dead".

Re:Federal law has an effect, too
Oops -- wrong link. The article linked in TFS that I quoted is here.

Re:Federal law has an effect, too
Not according to a comment by Justin Levitt, a law professor at Loyola University, in one of the linked articles and acknowledged by Mattingly - he did say that incorporating it might be an option for further research though. This was apparently a "proof of concept" with deliberately simple rules, but given the interest and positive feedback it seems to be generating I'd like to see what happens if this could be adapated to include a more complete set of rules, not to mention be adapted for other countries where this is a problem.

Re:Marathons on podcastsOur local station seems to realize the annoyance factor of the pledge drives, and found a way to make it work for them:
Occasionally, they let listeners know that, for every $75K raised before the spring pledge drive, they'll shorten the spring pledge drive by a day.

Thumbs down on radio above 92.5MHz
Stay below 92.5MHz on your FM dial and you're usually a lot better off.
You'll often find NPR stations and college radio, often almost completely void of annoying DJs and commercial interruptions.
In the triangle we've got:
88.1 -- WKNC @ NC State Listen in high-quality .mp3 or .ogg (station formats and history) I have really grown to like "After Hours" between 20:00 and 23:00Eastern on weekdays. Saturday evening is pretty decent hip hop mix. You're in for a surprise if you try Friday evenings or Sunday mornings :) Some PSA's.
88.9 -- WSHA @ Shaw University Listen in .wma or Real. Mostly Jazz. SUPPORT
89.3 -- WXYC @ Duke Listen in .mp3, .ogg, or Real to one of the first radio station in the world to rebroadcast over the net. Eclectic and chill.
89.7 -- TheClassicalStation, WCPE Listen in .mp3, .ogg, .wma, Quicktime, or Real. (please send them a few bucks if you stream their music!) All classical all the time. (Just disconnect if you're not listening!) SUPPORT
91.5 -- WUNC in Chapel Hill Listen in .mp3, .wma, or Real (from iBiblio) to a well funded public radio station. You get Terry Gross, BBC and Day to Day. "Back Porch Music" on weekend evenings (great bluegrass). Program Schedule SUPPORT
I know everybody doen't have such a wonderful selection at the bottom of the dial as the Triangle, but check it out locally - you may discover something... (tune manually rather than with "seek" or "scan" as these will often miss low powered - sometimes high quality - listening opportunities). If you don't have a FM tuner onboard your music player, you can either pipe in audio from a regular radio to your soundcard for automatic recordings and conversion to your favorite format or use the FM tuner that's built in to many TV capture cards and do the same.
