Re:Not Ironic
Here's a good list of other things that aren't ironic.

MPXAt West Virginia University, to graduate CS students were required to take a course in which they wrote an operating system called MPX. Students used a book titled A Practical Approach to Operating Systems (Computer Science Series) written by Malcolm G. Lane, James D. Mooney (both professors at WVU at the time). There was also a companion workbook to match.
Topics covered were all the usuals for an OS, such as
- command handler
- memory management
- process scheduling--e.g., round-robin dispatch
- device drivers & I/O
- etc.
The book was well written and easy to follow. I have had the fortune to take classes with both professors, and they are very knowledgable on the subject. In fact, I just looked and Dr. Mooney still teaches at WVU, and is in fact teaching CS256: Operating Systems Structures this semester. The course was excellent. And the book made the subject matter easy to follow. It's one of my favorite textbooks from my college days. A very easy read.

Add WVU to the List...
West Virginia University announced that it is banning Napster (and similar apps) due to it consuming 15% of bandwidth. Their press release goes on to tell students that they are more than welcome to download legal MP3s from websites, listen to MP3s, and even use Napster from their personal ISPs.

Re:Not an easy one, this
Well, interesting what you can find on Google. From http://www.cs.wvu.edu/~jdm/ classes/cs258/OScat/batch.html
OS/360
Generic name for operating systems for the IBM S/360, and later S/370. First version released 1966 [Mealy et al 1966]. See also OS/PCP, OS/MFT, OS/MVT, OS/VS1, OS/SVS, and OS/MVS.
So, thats 1966 for version 1 of OS/360.
OS/MFT, OS/MFT-II
Multiprogramming with a Fixed number of Tasks. Simple version of OS/MVT suitable for processors with limited memory. First release 1967, substantial revision 1968. [Mealy et al 1966, Auslander et al 1981].
Thats 1967 for OS/MFT. Which means OS/360 is the earliest IBM version (That i can find). There are also some others such as SUE and POS, but they only give dates of "late 1960's", so i can't tell if these are earlier than 1966 or not. But hey, i think we're getting close ;) -
Re:Other old examples of net vision?
Well, I believe the origin of this "unplug yourself and experience the real world, dumbass" genre of romantic sciffy stared with The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster. It certainly seems to predict a great deal of the capabilities of the modern Internet.

random thoughtsPhilip,
I attended your 2 day leture at MIT back in the beginning of April, and I must say that while you are a good speaker, you tend to think that your view is right just because you think it's right and then dismiss other people's views for not being yours.
For example, you state that the web should be educational, which to a degree we all agree, but when you started to trash a site in your speach (some car site), for not being an encylopdia on automotives! That's going a bit far!
There is room for all types of sites on the web, both those which do teach (which is great), and those that sell and educate the user about the copmany and product only (like 99% of all 'dot com' sites right now).
About your idea for ARSUniversity, which I will have to agree that it should be called ARSTradeschool. How would you handle those with learning disabilities or other handicaps which would like to attend?
Finally, about yourself. I think that you have become what you hate the most in others in the computer industry, overly selfcentered. You 'hate' Bill Gates because he is such a strong personallity, which anyone who has talked with you knows that you are very much the same!
We have seen the face of our enemy, and he is ourself.
Hey, check out my photos too!Best of luck!

Only 200 pounds?
Heck, I don't weigh that much less than that. Neither do a bunch of my friends. Maybe we should get together and beat up on Verisign and steal its lunch-money.
These companies really have to learn that it's not that impressive if they weigh only slightly more than the average American male. Even if America is a chronically obese nation.
Maybe Microsoft would like to help them out by hooking them up with some of that combination bovine-growth hormone and human-g rowth hormone regimen that's keeping Gates's hair so glossy and thighs so sexy. They'll help make Verisign a man. How do I know this? Try searching Google for "make you a man". Microsoft comes up as #2. Does Judge Jackson know about this?.... -
Re:Good, Bad, and UglyI think it's up to the site whether they want to have it easily accessible by many groups, not the government. Just seems like YAGRI (Yet Another Government Regulation on the Internet)
1) The ADA was inspired by a citizens group who lobbied for its passage so this is not the standard government interference scenario.
2) The National Federation of the Blind, not the government, has filed the lawsuit.
3) I work on a state government web site and we have ALT tags on everything and are almost fully ADA compliant; however, full compliance is not an absolute requirement. We have to achieve compliance to the best of our ability which means if we don't have the money, time or resources to maintain it, we are not obligated to do so although we have done the best we can.
Given that government state agencies are only required to be in compliance as is within their capability, I would think it could and should be aruged that many commerical web sites depend on technology that cannot be reduced into text elements that is required by the screen converters the blind uses and to force them to do so would be inappropriate interference of private business.
Just my 3 cents.
