Re:Linux Useability
Actually, Corel Linux was supposedly resurrected as Xandros Linux, however I have seen little activity on their web site over the past few months. Shame, really. Seemed like a good effort.

Re:Oh, come on!
If you check the Xandros downloads page, you'd see that Xandros hasn't relased anything yet, and as such, aren't required to release the source either.

Re:Corel /Xandros Linux
Though I hope they include alien or a package converter. One of the small problems my brother ran into with Corel Linux was since its Debian based and not off the RPM it was tough trying to teach him how to convert the packages and get them to run.
From their Desktop OS page:
* Xandros supports both DEB (apt) and RPM package formats
I agree that it's sometimes tricky to convert/install RPMs and have things work as expected (not surprisingly). However, there's already a lot of software packaged in .debs. Just search at packages.debian.org to see what's available. -
Re:A different view
I'm not sure MS' investment was the reason Corel dumped Linux. As I see it, it's more likely that both were caused by the same factor: Corel was in bad shape.
Dumping Linux was all about Corel "focusing on key areas", meaning as a business, they couldn't justify continuing development on it. I doubt Microsoft gave two shits about Corel doing development on Linux. I mean, they wanted them to do .NET for Linux! Check the old press releases!
And if anyone is curious about the (former) Corel distribution, check out Xandros -
advice to Xandros
Corel is selling it (the Linux division) because of the change in leadership. The former chief executive thought it was the future of the company but Burney thought they were putting more money into it than they needed to," said a source who wished to remain anonymous.
Xandros does not even have a website yet.
But I'd like to give them a bit of user-end advice.
I have a friend who is working-class and got a computer with Linux because he couldn't afford Windows, and he needs something to write with.
To get Linux to people like him, you need to do what AOL is doing - sell or give away Linux distributions out of little TAKE ONE hoppers at computer stores and supermarkets, on every continent on earth.
They should be packaged with Internet access as well.
