Re:Best video cards under Linux - Xfree?
I have used a few linux systems with different video cards. Running both XFree and Accel-X I am assuming you are under a budget and given that I would reccomend you look into going for the Matrox G200 (G400 if you can afford it) or some of the old Mellinium II cards. The Viper550 and some of the old NumberNine cards (FX 531) seems to do a great job for 2d at 1024x786. I am running Mandrake with SiS 6326 so i cant wait to get the new server to get some improvement! i dont recommend this card unless you are on a real tight budget. well thats my $.02
Check out some of the benchmarks at XIG AGP card Benchmarks -
Re:absolute garbage
It seems to me that you are not helping make slashdot any better with that post. After reading it I can pretty much agree with you. That last line especially convinces me. Yes, that parody page didn't live up to my expectations, but if you're not willing to post at least constructive criticism, please go start your own "news for nerds" site.
As far as slashdot being dead, I have to contend that you're just plain wrong.
About midnight eastern time last night, I learned that the ATI Rage Pro LT chipset, which comes standard in the laptop I recieve from my college, is not fully supported by XFree86. I had two options, spend $150 on a commercial software from Xi Graphics, or live with console only.
After reading the devasting information, I followed a link from this page to a thread on Ask Slashdot. The first post, from theMissingLink, had a link to this page, where I found multiple ways to get XFree86 up and running on my laptop.
Those who only complain without offering solutions may be trying to kill it, but no, slashdot is not dead. It won't be dead any time soon.

Matrox G400Xi Graphics, the makers of Accelerated X, give rave reviews to the new Matrox G400:
Double WOW! We just posted the benchmark numbers for the Matrox Millennium G400 with the 300MHz RAMDAC. It is the first card we have tested to break 50 Xmarks on the x11perf tests. In TrueColor, it racks up 40.1 Xmarks. See the Riva TNT2 below. It almost gets there, and it is a hot chip, too. At this time, XFree86 servers do not support the G400.
So that looks like your choice.

For $1000, you can get alot
Xfree doesn't support much of the high end hardware, but the commercial X-servers do. Go to Xi for the best X-server and full OpenGL support. Metro-X is another good vendor of commercial X-servers. Not quite as good but a better bang for your buck. Their servers cost between $50 and $250 depending on what you want, but they are usually worth it. As for Hardware to get. Find out what the X-server will support and get the best one.

3D graphics
For OpenGL graphics, you'll need either AccelX from Xi graphics , or Metro X with one of the supported cards.
However, the accelerated versions are RSN, which is not what you want, so you may be better off looking at an old Indy or Indogo2, either from the open market, or at SGI's remanufactured products page.
