Re:2000 = no DEP & no TcpChimney IP parameters
"from your reference, which says 2000 "does not run background apps" - by perryizgr8 (1370173) on Friday March 27, @12:04PM (#27358537)
Perry, Windows 2000 DOES run backgrounded tasks (such as drivers, services, & even apps via the registry "run areas" & startup groups)... &, just like Windows XP, Server 2003, VISTA, Server 2008, & Windows 7 do (as did Windows 9x, NT 3.5x-4.0, etc.)... pre-emptively no less.
They most likely meant "not as many backgrounded apps" by default, such as services (because 2000 has a LOT less of those than XP does by default).

Fair enough then, now that I am aware of it... I gave you only SOME differences between Windows 2000 & its descendants in Windows XP/Server 2003/VISTA/Server 2008, & Windows 7 - &, there are others...
(Fact is, I gave you BOTH protective AND performance gaining ones & ones actually IN FAVOR of XP/Server2003/Server 2006/VISTA/Windows 7, in fact.)
Were I to choose "the best overall OS" that MS has, right now?
Windows Server 2003 SP#2 fully hotfix patched.
Secure & stable enough to keep NASDAQ running 24x7, to the fabled "5-9's" of 99.999% uptime because Windows Server 2003 + SQLServer 2005 does, and has done for YEARS now mind you, a great job of being the official disseminator of trade data @ NASDAQ, running into the "fabled 5-9's" of 99.999% uptime for years now, 24x7, via failover clustering... that was back in 2006 (possibly earlier, as that is only the date of the article):

Os/2 & VMS also live on in Windows NT-based OS
"VMS isn't dead either. It's still supported for VAX, Alpha and Itanium hardware, although you can only buy new Itanium systems running it. Somewhat ironically, the 4-ring protection model introduced with the 80386 was designed to make porting VMS to Intel chips (from VAX) easier. Instead, VMS went to Alpha, which only had two protection modes..." - by TheRaven64 (641858) on Thursday March 26, @02:21PM (#27345419) Homepage
Agreed, & that's one I've had exposure to, from the midrange &/or mainframe world in the 1980's - 1990's as well... &, it also "lives on" in other ways, per my subject-line in my reply here:
----

However, since this is about PC OS' I would think, though the title doesn't say so specifically, but those are mostly the examples we've been shown? I think this one's about PC OS' I.E.-> Moreso than those for mainframes & midranges, like IBM System 34/36/38's & AS400 (now called zOS iirc)?
Imo, this is sort of important (as to VMS and OS/2 "still living on"):
That OS, in (OS/2) by IBM + Microsoft, became a good part of the Windows NT-based OS family by Microsoft really, & I really liked it, &, there is a reason I mention it.
(GammaTech Utilities backup & disk defrag come to mind, good stuff that rounded Os/2 2.0-Warp 4 out nicely!)
Also in the Windows NT-based OS family by Microsoft, what other OS ontop of Os/2 are in its foundations??
You guessed it:
VMS by Digital
(Since its designer/architect (D. Cutler) was from DEC... )
So, VMS & OS/2 aren't "really totally dead", either, if you think about it.
"Old Chevy's never die: They just get faster"
As the saying goes!
(I suppose, that I could also say that "Windows 95 lives on" in the GUI interface as well I suppose, but, that's technically not an OS, only a shell for it... & even things from UNIX are part of it, such as the BSD IP stack, but again, not an OS)
APK
P.S.=> Thought I'd add that all in, as to my thoughts on Os/2 &/or VMS still "living on" & how/why, as well as being in agreement - albeit, in a slightly different way, because they helped shape the most used Operating System on the planet in Windows NT based ones which run on the most used hardware platform on the planet in x86 that keeps NASDAQ going 24x7 to the "fabled '5-9's'" of 99.999% uptime via failover clustering in combination w/ SQLServer 2005 acting as the official trade data dessimination system for they -> http://windowsfs.com/enews/nasdaq-migrates-to-sql-server-2005 , as well as being shown (once security-hardened) to be virus/trojan/malware/spyware free for 1++ yrs. (&, for myself, the same & for more than a decade so for myself in fact) here -> http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=df24f74dc34060c57fa9e14fb57e5a87&t=28430&page=3 as well as being extremely stable & with faster performance after tuning... apk

"Microsoft runs a proprietary show where they 'set the standard' themselves" - by TheMMaster (527904) on Thursday March 19, @02:48PM (#27259629) Homepage
They sure do, and that standard runs on a good 95% of the world's PC's, from home user systems, up thru departmental LANs, & right up into enterprise-wide WANs + Back Office server type applications, on the most used hardware platform there is for personal computers & servers, in x86...
A standard that acts as the official disseminator of trade data @ NASDAQ using Windows Server + SQLServer 2005, & it has done so via failover clustering, for years now in a stable & consistent manner, running into the fabled "5-9's" of 99.999% uptime, since 2006 to present day:

"And please, do point out an example of John Carmack modding you up" - by Anonymous Coward on Thursday March 19, @12:19AM (#27251625)

So please - show us where I explicitly verbatim had said that John Carmack modded my posts upwards?
I never once did so, & you can't and you KNOW it.
Especially when I can, in turn, ask you to provide the proof, via quoting myself, of my saying John Carmack mods my posts up and you have to omit quoting me saying that, because I never ONCE did.
BOTTOM-LINE on this account, is this:
I only stated Mr. John Carmack posts here on occasion (in response to your calling people here "slashtards" & what-not & that Mr. John Carmack is not a "tard" by any means (and you have repeatedly called myself that, & others here as well - real classy of you (NOT))).
Anyhow/anyways - THE PROOF THAT YOU TRULY CANNOT READ IS RIGHT THERE ALONE ABOVE and in your inability to quote me saying what you accused me of... so, please - look into "Hooked on Phonics", ok?
(You need it: You cannot read, and your dim brain has already been shown to mess you up on that account, above!)
After all, you are completely FREE to put up a quote of MY words, stating I literally said "John Carmack mods up my posts", ok?

Answer the QUESTION FOR "MR. AC TROLL"
"Stop cutting and pasting the same post, you're boring me" - by Anonymous Coward on Thursday March 19, @12:41PM (#27257609)
Why should I? You haven't answered my questions, so I repeat them for you (along w/ my evidences):
No, I think you're just "confused as usual", per your blatantly illiterate screwup here:
ORIGINALLY, YOU SAID ->
----
"And please, do point out an example of John Carmack modding you up" - by Anonymous Coward on Thursday March 19, @12:19AM (#27251625)

So please - DO show us where I explicitly verbatim had said that John Carmack modded my posts upwards?

PROOF THAT YOU TRULY CANNOT READ IS RIGHT THERE ALONE... so, please - look into "Hooked on Phonics", ok?
----
Hilarious:
You really CANNOT read, because I asked a simple proof to come from you here earlier, since you falsely accused me of saying John Carmack modded up my posts... can you show us where I said that?
Also hilarious, is your avoiding answering THIS simple question, so, just answer this simple question, with a YES or NO:
----
QUESTION FOR "MR. AC TROLL": (Which he has evaded, roughly 12x by now, "oddly", lmao?)
The section of this forums we are in currently is the developer's section, correct?

(REMEMBER: A Yes or No answer to THIS question, is all that is required)
APK
P.S.=> Above all else, as to my writing being decent & my providing proof thereof (vs. your erroneous b.s., lol)? Anyone can verify these proofs of my writing & appearing in respected publications in this field in good articles, softwares, & more as regards the field of computing & software development (especially since this is the DEVELOPERS SECTION HERE, not "english writing class", lol, which YOU seem to think it is, though you obviously cannot read) here below:

Like usual, you avoided the questions asked of you, like usual (what is the forums section here called? DEVELOPERS SECTION, not the "english grammar critique" section)!
Plus, you have NOTHING even remotely like the list I can produce of where others found my works in guides good (via their testimonials quoted, plus high ratings & massive numbers of views as well as being made sticky thread/pinned guides), & also that of respected written publications in this field for a decade & 1/2 now almost, over 10x, saying quite the reverse of what you have:

Quit evading them, it doesn't look good for you @ this point since you constantly avoid answering simple questions, doubtless due to your illiteracy which I have produced actual proof of prior to my p.s. below, in regards to Mr. John Carmack!)

Funny - My post was modded UP as "+2 Insightful", rather than being modded down in effete retaliation vs. the easily verified facts I posted above in regards to Windows stability & in both enterprise settings @ NASDAQ, and where Windows allows easy implementation of secured desktops from a central source (& yes, it's doable, see the user testimonial below), AND quite easily, vs. not so easy in Linux apparently (per the methods I noted above, whereas by way of comparison, Linux users cannot do so nearly as easily).
AND PLEASE: Guys, don't even TRY to tell me that the "Pro-*NIX" crowd here doesn't do any 'mocking' of Windows & Microsoft for Pete's sake: You KNOW they do!
(Heck, look @ the "BORG PICTURE" of Bill Gates used here as 1 single example thereof, & I "rest my case", on that note)
Anyhow/anyways, that all "said & aside"?
I'll top that off now, w/ a testimonial of how secured & stable a Windows NT-based OS of modern designs (2000/XP/Server 2003 &/or VISTA + Server2k8 also, since each responds to the techniques noted in the URL below just the same) can REALLY be, if done right, from the experiences of home users as well, after security-hardening Windows:

So does this testimonial from only 1 person who enjoys virus/spyware/worms/trojan/rootkit & malware-in-general FREE operations, & FOR MORE THAN 1++ yr. now, especially in the face of worms like CONFICKER lately even... w/out 'downtime' associated with moving folks to a new OS platform, & certainly one they are NOT familiar with.
APK
P.S.=> Now, I strongly wager that IF it is ever "the year of Linux on the desktop"? It too will be as strongly assaulted as is Windows today & for the past 2 decades now by malware authors, simply because it is the MOST used OS there is. They're after the LARGEST POSSIBLE TARGET after all, & the monies or other critical information users stash on their PC's - you make "Linux #1"?? B.) It recommends you stall out indiscriminate usage of javascript also!

Hey... YOU TELL ME, lol, IF it works, or not..."
----
It'll work... addtionally blocking ACL (access control lists) access to the autorun.inf files in the root of you drives helps also (vs. how it spreads from USB sticks etc. et al).
(Do all of the above, especially if you don't need to be sharing disks/folders/files from your system to users over the public internet or a local LAN/WAN (saving CPU cycles, RAM, &/or other forms of I/O as well you would be otherwise wasting because you are not using what the server service provides, file & print sharing), & it quite literally (@ least theoretically) should "PROOF YOU" vs. this worm).

It works, and has been working for myself since around 1997...
(When I began writing up guides (I was doing it on forums like 3dfiles.com before 1998 though) to submit as articles for websites that were Windows NT-based, to improve the security &/or performance of a Windows NT-based OS, such as the one from NTCompatible.com's former 1998-2003 "Article #1", where it was later featured @ Neowin forums, circa 2001 -> http://www.neowin.net/news/main/01/11/29/apk-a-to-z-internet-speedup--security-text & rated very well)
Currently?
The guide is featured now on 20++ forums online, & has yielded some very good results (see my p.s. as an example) for people using its points on many levels!
E.G,-> It has crossed 200,000++ views in the relatively short timeframe of the 1 yr. this latest iteration of it has been online, & it was made an "ESSENTIAL GUIDE/Sticky-Pinned Thread" on 15/20 of those forums, as well as being the most viewed in a short timeframe (considering it has only been online in THIS form for a yr. now, & some of those sites it is on have been around a decade++), &/or being rated 5/5 stars, etc. et al... )
HOWEVER, AN IMPORTANT POINT (illustrated by "hard concrete evidence" in test scores):
The tips/tricks/techniques in that older model still shown @ Neowin forums would yield between 60-72/100 on the CIS Tool test - the new model of said guide, by way of comparison? 99/100 possible & doable scores result (examples thereof are shown in said thread URL above in fact)).
It just works, for both superior speed online AND security. From my own usage of it? 3++ yrs. now on this machine, no "bugs" or other hassles, & running as ADMINISTRATOR the entire time (& the system I had before this, 4++ yrs. same result).
APK
P.S.=> And, as to that guide's efficacy? The BEST testimonial I can provide, is the results of folks (others, not just myself) using it, such as those like THRONKA here, who have applied it to not only his own personal systems, but those of his clients, and NO VIRUS/TROJAN/ROOTKIT/SPYWARE/MALWARE-IN-GENERAL INFESTATIONS or other screwups, for more than 1++ yr. now, see here:

AND, that's just evidence that once a Windows NT-based OS of more modern variety (2000 onwards basically) is security hardened & users learn to practice some fairly easy rules that if they adhere to them? Windows IS stable, & long-lasting @ higher performance
(3rd yr. running solid here, machine before it 4++ yrs., & neither had viruses/malware/trojans/rootkits/spyware, whatsoever, due to that guide I authored last yr. because I have been doing "layered security" for a decade++ now)
That guide's gone over 200,000++ views in a short time in only 1 yr. across 20 total forums, where on 15/20, it is an "ESSENTIAL GUIDE" or 'sticky thread', & on the remaining 5 it is usually in the top-most views in said short timeframe (because some of these sites have been going for a decade or more) or rated 5/5 stars (some of them do all of the above)...
I'd look @ the results possible there too, because the tool used to make it easier? Runs on other platforms also...
(There you will see 99/100 scores on CIS Tool, & I have not SEEN a Linux setup do that well on said test (Bert64 from this forums managed to pull off a 90/100, but it was under emulation/virtualization, & that means more moving parts (thus more possible breaches due to failure is possible typically in those scenarios which even Theo DeRaadt felt as I do about it when Bert64 & I butted heads (he's decent technically @ least imo, I will give he that much out of respect))
FACT ABOUT WINDOWS + SQLSERVER STABILITY FROM INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONS:
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 & Microsoft SQLServer 2005 have been running to the fabled "5-9's" of 99.999% constant uptime, via failover clustering iirc (smart practice just in case) for YEARS now, while the combination of Windows + SQLServer functions as the official trade data dissemination system there.

P.S.=> Don't believe all the "negative hype" the "Pro-*NIX" crowd here spouts - many are just "followers" that accept that hype as "the word of God" & it is anything but, as the cases above (clearly visible or provable evidences, easily)... apk

That's in addition to discussing this:

http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=213148
While reading there I saw the good results people like Thronka are getting for themselves and their customers which was no virus or spyware for more than a year. That was good enough for me. So I tried the cistool tests you noted myself and have not been infected since. That's been for 6 months now. I saw what you state happens on vista regarding the hosts file and you are straight up right. It is a mistake on microsofts part unless there is some other peripheral reason as to why microsoft has elected for inefficiency in a hosts file, though I must agree that removing port filtering was not a good move on ms end. Again thanks for this information and the backing of it from securityfocus too. Keep up the good work apk.

Well - They do!
(Via this guide's steps (as secure as ANY OS out there,vs. their normal defaults for security, & moreso (because it goes FAR beyond that))):

HOW TO SECURE Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 & even VISTA, plus, make it "fun-to-do", via CIS Tool Guidance (& beyond):

APK
P.S.=> See here, specifically "THRONKA"'s replies/results there for a reference, as to how effective this guide is, in securing a Windows based PC. Just for some "success stories" using its steps:
http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28430&page=3
(A typical user's machines (&, also his CLIENTS' MACHINES also running 1++ yr. now so far) & all, malware free, after applying the steps from the guide in the URL above)... apk

OTHERS (in the URL below, See THRONKA's reply there) say QUITE otherwise vs. your ambiguous no detail b.s. reply:
http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28430&page=3
AND, illustrate the success others now enjoy online via the points in that guide, actually work, vs. these types of malware machinations for the past year now...?
----
And, as far as myself being 'clueless'? Well, then how come I have appeared in respected publications for various programming & network engineering points I have come up with the past 13++ yrs. now have appeared in these:
Windows NT Magazine (now Windows IT Pro 1996), for work done for EEC Systems/SuperSpeed.com on PAID CONTRACT (writing portions of their SuperCache program) albeit, for their SuperDisk & HOW TO APPLY IT, took them to a finalist position @ MS Tech Ed, two years in a row iirc.
WINDOWS MAGAZINE, 1997, "Top Freeware & Shareware of the Year" issue page 210, #1/first entry in fact (my work is there)
PC-WELT FEB 1998 - page 84, again, my work is featured there
PC-WELT FEB 1999 - page 83, again, my work is featured there
CHIP Magazine 7/99 - page 100, my work is there
WINDOWS MAGAZINE, WINTER 1998 - page 92, insert section, MUST HAVE WARES, my work is again, there
GERMAN PC BOOK, Data Becker publisher "PC Aufrusten und Repairen" my work is contained in it
HOT SHAREWARE Numero 46 issue, pg. 54 (PC ware mag from Spain), my work is there, first one featured, yet again!

So - What did I post that is "bad information"??
APK
P.S.=> For SOME reason? I don't think we will hear back from BitZtream on this, & ESPECIALLY with specifics -& especially vs. the results others have had & success using the guide I posted...
(See, I have noted that those that "bitch" about the guide I posted are USUALLY some botmaster idiot who is adversely affected by its points - simply because the points in my guide actually DO work vs. today's threats online, & lists exception areas + many types of layered security work-arounds that work vs. them)...
So, what do I see in "retaliation" usually from those that security guide's adversely affect who offer NO specifics? WELL - Replies like the one I am replying too... lol!

Well, 2009 is here, & "layered security" is THE trend out there, today, for security vs. these machinations...
OR
Doesn't this article tend to second that idea (such as using HOSTS files to block the servers these malware worms use, another idea that the article I put up notes that also works for stopping this, & other, worms like it, by stalling access to their command & control servers):

Doesn't the A/C I am responding to sound JUST like some botmaster that my post here offends, because everything it notes (especially the guide I put up) stalls out tihs malware, & others like it... or, don't the findings of OTHERS tend to 2nd that for me?
NOW - As Far as others NOT seeing great results using said guide? Well - See here, read THRONKA's results using that guide I posted:

P.S.=> Some people *THINK* they can "classify" others PC use patterns, or what THEY have seen as THEIR personal sample-set, as the "end-all/be all" ultimately comprehensive solution... lol, like the fool I am replying to here ("he has seen it all", yea, right, lol), sorry to "blow your mind" wannabe, but, others I have cited here show quite otherwise vs. your mere 'anecdotal b.s.' from YOUR "vast experience" only... apk

IMO & that of MANY others (a sensible one no less)?
FireFox's popularity is its own downfall here, though - less "security by obscurity", because just like IE is, it's used more by avg. users. Think malware writers don't KNOW & TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS? Well, if you were they, wouldn't YOU also target the biggest target there is, vs. the lesser used smaller targets (especially to make illegal monies & such via botnet infestations etc. of others' pc's? Of COURSE you would!)
(IE though, is only popular imo, due to it being incorporated into the OS, this is one move MS makes that I do not like - they rip off ideas already present in the freeware/shareware OR commercial market, & even attorneys are afraid to go after them, because they don't want to work a case that can be dragged out for 20++ yrs. in courts of law... in short, big money? Try this next year gentlemen (those of you in this contest this year)...
That is, if you did not this year (or, applied points & tools like this URL suggests), for your Windows rigs (& even *NIX variants as well):
HOW TO SECURE Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 & even VISTA, + make it "fun" to do, via CIS Tool guidance:
http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=c5687d1b44107836fa4d1dd9ba76f348&t=28430
CIS Tool? Hey - It works!
(& especially if you apply CIS Tool's points & those I layered ontop of them)...
Though the points in that URL are MOSTLY geard to "stand-alone" single home machines online (home users, no LAN etc. et al), it does note how its points CAN be applied to LAN/WAN environs as well to secure them, & with examples from companies (not just my own, either) using CIS Tool guidance & my points ontop of them to secure themselves.
APK
P.S.=> 2-3 hrs. of your time, in downloading, installing, + running CIS Tool... then, applying its suggestions/points (based on industry-wide best practices for security, such as those listed @ NIST for example & more), & then lastly applying points I make ontop of them, will gain you YEARS to DECADES into the distance of secure, safe, & faster internet performance & uptime... apk -

Try this (IF you're a Windows 2000/XP/Server2003 or even VISTA user):
HOW TO SECURE Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 & even VISTA + make it "fun" to do, via CIS Tool Guidance:
http://www.xtremepccentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=b81b9def0d31399fca2b236544f2875b&t=28430
It truly works, IF you can apply & adhere to some SIMPLE rules it notes.
The 1 thing I think that many "security pros" & network admins/techs fear, is that "normal end users" begin to grasp how to secure themselves (OR, that they even begin to grasp things Tcp/IP (networking))...
If everyone starts to realize how SIMPLE it is? Then, that's taking away the need for the "pros", period (that is, IF an end-user's interested in securing themselves, & most are... else, why put locks + security systems into their homes or vehicles).
Don't let this b.s. from this article fool you (that people aren't interested in security OR knowing how to achieve it)!
Simply because common-sense & looking around you shows you clearly & cleanly otherwise, period.
APK
P.S.=> The best part is this though, & that is that CIS Tool is NOT restricted to Windows users only... there are versions for various *NIX variants too, & they're decent enough as well... apk -
