Making Things Easy Is Hard
paul.dunne writes "John Gruber of Daring Fireball has written a long and considered riposte to Eric Raymond's recent lament concerning the poor quality of user interfaces in free software. The core of his argument is that 'developing software with a good UI requires both aptitude and a lot of hard work.' One point that particularly struck me: according to Gruber, 'Unix nerds who care about usability are switching to Mac OS X in droves'!" -
Video-Game Publishers Outsource Development
randomErr writes "According to a San Jose Mercury News article reprinted at the Miami Herald: 'Mark Vange is in the vanguard of globalizing the video-game industry. He employs 30 game developers in St. Petersburg, Russia, who have worked on everything from flight simulators to dragon-fighting games. 'We can get the work done for half the cost that it takes in the U.S.,' said Vange, president of Ketsujin Studios. Similar outsourcing of video-game production is being done in places like China, India, Vietnam and parts of Eastern Europe. California game developers, who are the creative force behind a $10 billion industry in the U.S. market, view the trend with a combination of fear and anticipation'." -
Looping E-mails Beat The Net Down
Staili writes "Singapore-based women's magazine caused problems when it forwarded its mails to a large list of recipients, mainly mailing lists. In addition to security@suse.com, some help and subscribe lists were included; the type of addresses that tend to send out an automatic reply confirming receipt. And the loop was ready." I'm sure anyone who's messed with mail enough has accidentally created a loop or two in their day, but this is really slimey. -

Web And Database Synchronization?
crazney asks: "I am developing a medium sized Web site with a friend, and we have stumbled across a small problem. Our hosting will consist of several Web servers load balanced, and possible two or three database servers. The extra database servers may be used for load balancing or for redundancy. My question is, what can we use to keep these up to date? We would like to ensure that all the Web servers always contain an exact same copy of the Web page, and any changes to the database affect the others. These servers may be geographically separated, so something low bandwidth would be helpful. For the Web servers, a quick and dirty way could be CVS, but I'm stumped for the database servers (which will probably be running PostgreSQL)."
