Another alternative
I hate to suggest a change of tack, but digital photography is one of those areas that changes so fast that a better/faster/cheaper way to do something may well pop up right after you implement an expensive solution to a problem.
Case in point - the new Sony Mavica that writes directly to mini-CDs. There's a page here that will give you some basic info. ZD has a puff piece here that may also be of use.
Frankly, this looks like a much better, much simpler, much cheaper, and, optionally, higher resolution way to meet your needs. Even if the thing isn't available yet, it'd be cheaper and easier to fly to Japan and get one than to do the sort of thing you're contemplating. You could even afford to get two so you'll always have a backup.

Re:Another backward buyoutTheir TV shows are better than ZDNet's too. I've actually talked to people who have seen CNet's, but I have yet to meet one who has seen ZDTV. This is far from scientific, but it has been my experience.
Just for reference, ZDTV can be found on Dish Network on channel 191. I'm the exact opposite: I used to watch their channel a lot of the time (freeking apartment complex
.. just had to build that new hi-rise right there, eh?), but I've yet to see a C|Net (anyone besides me remember when the pipe symbol was part of their name?) program anywhere, even on (admittedly crappy) cable.

It looks like the real URL for the pictures is: http://kurt.andover.net/bazar/fsf
or http://kurt.andover.net/bazaar/fsf, but note they won't be up for another hour or so.
Also, ZDTV will be broadcasting the awards here: http://www.zdtv.com/radio on Thursday, Dec 16 2:00pm http://www.zdtv.com/radio -
Screw AOLTV and MSNBC
ZDTV is the way to go. Best shows. Best topics.

big picture on zdtv
If you ever watch ZDTV you'd notice that they have a big deal with Intel to give away a couple tons of the net cams, then have people call in and ask questions on the air and such... it would be great if some of us linux and solaris users could get on there also... and tell Leo and Kate what thier doing wrong (despite all thier cool linux props on the set) I remember seeing the Intel Bigpicture card/capture card as being one of the few supported by Video4Linux... pretty cool also, if anyone can point me to the java version of the Zdtv realplaces chat software, that would be great (I just cant find it)
