PD writes "This page describes some actually existing molecules with strange and unfortunate names. " Don't miss the "molecules you should be aware of" at the bottom of the page. You'll need a class in organic chemistry to get the jokes, though.

Okay, funny, and I didn't even need a class in organic chemistry, basic chemistry works;)
I think slashdot should do something to incurage the use of the scince section.. maybe let more articles like this one through.. so people might actually check it out more oftin.

Re the unununium entry
The temporary systematic names are latinised from the atomic number
Most heavy elements have "real" names, but there are some clashes between the names assigned by the American Chemistry Society, and the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry. The current situation is something along the lines of:
Atomic #| Temporary | Old International | Old American | Current

I think that all articles should be displayed on the main page by default and then people could chose, if they didn't want to see too much science news that these only be displayed in the science section etc. rather than the articles not being displayed at all.
To the artice I have to say, I thought it was really funny. especially the last one...

I totally agree with you. Slashdot just doesn't feel as nerdy anymore without the science articles. In fact, today's front-page looks a lot more like that of a political activist site than a news-for-nerd site.
On the bright side, the way it is now the science sites don't get slashdotted as often...
