Few programs arouse the advocacy that the simple texteditor can. Its the software that we run all the time, and it needs to fit us like a glove. Except when you take off the glove and slap the crap out of someone using an inferior text editor. This category really exists just because we like flamewars. The nominees are of course Vim, Emacs, XEmacs, Pico and Joe. Fight it out for the winner and Vote for the one the deserves it.

    It's happening again! How can I choose between Emacs and XEmacs; now the evil vi (aka Bill Clinton) is going to win! :)

    First, I much prefer elvis to vim, I think it should be there, after all there are two emacsen there.

    Second, I don't think the Pico license meeets the Open Source Definition, which is why I started the nano project in the first place...the category is best *open source* editor, not best *nix editor.

    You kidding? I'm a vi user, but I wouldn't touch vim. I abstained on this one.. as I abstained on most. This awards thing is actually stupider than I thought it'd be.. quite a feat.

    I'll spare you all my rant on that last topic. Sheesh! --neil

    It is obvious that the vote is biased against emacsen, by listing both variants of the One True Editor (ahem). This will cause a split vote, thus leaving the lesser editors with a chance. Compare with the evil Roman numerical editor, of which only one variant is listed. No `nvi', `elvis', or `vile' options. Thus, the victims of vi will all vote for vim as what they think of as the lesser evil (and evil it is!).

    Somewhere, deep inside, we all know that people who use emacs are, well, wusses. It's not a real man's (or woman's) editor. So c'mon, vote for a real editor, will ya?
