There's some really interesting articles in this month's daemon news. Most notable are the configuration of FreeBSD as an ATM firewall and the setting up of a Compaq Proliant server with BSD. Definetely worth a read!!!

They decided to censor it and leave out the pissing contests between OpenBSD and the other *BSDs. I've lost all respect I once had for Daemon News. The *BSD community does have some serious problems, and trying to pretend they don't exist is not going to magically make them go away.

Why should daemon news pay attention to the childish behavior of a few individuals in the *BSD community? Eventho some of those individuals are quite prominent figures in the comunity, that doesn't make their behavior (or call it pissing contest if you like) less childish.

This is not news either, it at least dates back to the splitoff of OpenBSD, and probably even longer (I do remember something about BSDi and half of the BSD comunity going into full scale war mode)

Yes, the BSD comunity has a few problems, thats why its a good thing that there are multiple versions of the beast. Makes that many people can do things the way they like, and meanwhile they can learn from eachother. Sure, a bit more respect for eachother would be nice, but knowing one of the NetBSD core people in rl, and a few of the leading figures from other *BSDs from contacts on the net, they are all very strong headed people, which makes them quite a challange to deal with... but it is also what allows them to do what they are doing. Esp. in the case of OpenBSD I can imagine it is hard to justify all the work they are doing without taking a strong position on why exactly you are more or less reinventing the wheel. The same applies to NetBSD, and a bit less to FreeBSD.

Anyway, not a bad subject for discussion, but not news imho. If daemon news should pay attention to such things they should run a series about it with regular updates and scores and such... but I somehow doubt that many people would be very interested in seeing that ;-)
