Moon and Stars

Water Paradox writes: "The astronomy picture of the day is unusually beautiful today. I check it every day, and today is one of the best I've ever seen, and the large version of the image is detailed enough to make your own poster out of. I know, I know, there's lots of cool images on the 'net. But I thought I'd share this one."

But do you really want to encourage the trolls by telling them how beautiful the moon looks? It's just asking for trouble!

If you follow a couple of links at the bottom of the page, you'll find this, which is an archive of most of the files direrctly associated with the apollo program (and includes, as you would assume, lots of pretty pictures). I highly reccomend it, if only for the desktop images it provides.

It really is a lovely picture...

There are a number of spiral galaxies visible in the larger version of the picture, and I suppose if you looked closely you might find a couple of irregulars or ellipticals.

I expect this picture will be making an appearance in my Intro. to Astronomy class tomorrow.

    GG NASA!

The link given for the larger picture points to the right picture, but the picture of the day link points to today's picture (whatever that might be). The picture everyone's talking about is here.

btw, the larger picture has some astounding detail: don't miss it.
