GNU-Darwin Packages For Mac OS X.1, Darwin-1.4.1

proclus writes: "The GNU-Darwin packages are compatible with Apple's newly released Darwin-1.4.1, and we now have Net Installation instructions for Darwin-only users. Our Bootable Installer CD is now in beta, thanks to the efforts of GNU-Darwin developer rrp. As you can see in the screenshot, our packages work fine with the XFree86 software which is now a part of Apple's Darwin distribution. We have recently packaged the latest versions of Mac OS X.1 compatible OpenSSH and XFree86. (Our older OpenSSH and XFree86 packages appear to be broken.) It is important for OS X.1 users to upgrade their OpenSSH. This is a great time to check out our other packaged offerings, which are also Darwin-1.4.1 and Mac OS X.1 compatible. OSX.1 users who are new to GNU-Darwin might like to try our new Net Installer. Just follow the OS X-specific directions at the top of the script. "

    well, maybe not perfect, but even intermediate releases of anything mean imporvements (yay!).
    the simple net installer is a step in the right direction for anything, especially this...

    Go to Openpackages.org and see a standard that supports:
    * FreeBSD
    * NetBSD
    * OpenBSD
    * BSD/OS
    * Darwin
    * Solaris
    * RedHat Linux
    * BeOs
    AIX, HP-UX and Debian have support also.

    Yeah, I'm still not sure what the goal of "GNU-Darwin" is.

    As near as I can figure, Proclus doesn't think the BSD license is free enough, so he's making an exact clone of OpenPackages with a more restrictive license. Or maybe he thinks that "open" doesn't emphasise freedom enough, so he changed the prefix to one that doesn't contain the letters 'f', 'r', or 'e'.

    I could see someone trying to make a better OpenPackages than OpenPackages, or trying doing the OpenPackages idea in a new and different way. But from where I sit, I see near exact duplication of effort.

    You win the prize. Go into the dailydaemon archives and see him rant and rave about the 'freedom' of the GPL.

    Some people (like Bruce Perens) are only happy when they see a GPL on source code.

    GNU-Darwin's goal is not to create a package manager, but to have create a great Darwin installation. Currently OpenPackages does not cut it, so we are forced to make our own system. If OpenPackages ever meets our criteria, we'll include it.

    Note how the GNU-Darwin-ports is FreeBSD-ports. Now look at the web site, note how they list Apple, MIT and GPL licenses, and skip FreeBSD.

    Note how they take the BSD code and call it "OUR". At least these clowns have not filed the BSD copyrights off the code....yet.

    In short, the kind of behavior that is expected of GPL advocates.
