Nuon Development Kit Released
A anonymous Coward writes: "The free development kit for the Nuon (enhanced CPU found in DVD players such as the Samsung N501 and others) has been released at http://dev.nuon.tv. Let's see those MAME and DOOM ports get going!
Props to VM Labs for actually coming through on their promise to make Nuon a truly open gaming platform. Maybe other game console companies will take a hint from this if it helps the Nuon as much as I think it will."
I remember when this was first announced YEARS ago...
Nobody had a DVD player yet, but the prospects of getting one that could not only play digital movies but also play games? Wow... mindblowing
Today, nearly everyone has a DVD player. Well, thats a lie, but they're all over the place. Half of my local Blockbuster is DVD. Clearly, the format is doing well.
So now, its a question of who's going to buy this thing. Want a DVD player that can play games? Buy a PS2 (many people already have).
Want a DVD player for MAME and Doom? Well, as soon as we've got Linux on the PS2... once again: buy a PS2.
The technology just isn't exciting. Really, who on earth even cares anymore? If someone can answer me, I'd really appreciate it, because I don't see this technology going anywhere.

Development Platform
The standard platform for NUON development is a standard PC running Windows 2000. No special hardware is required, and even a laptop PC will usually be suitable. The only requirements are sufficient memory and available disk space to install and run the tools. The NUON SDK should also work OK with Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows XP, but these are not officially supported. Linux versions of some tools will be made available at a future date.
Their little javascript thing insists that you fill in a nosy spamming^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hregistration form before they let you download the actual SDK. How low-class. For that amount of trouble, I'd at least expect it to run on a system other than Microsoft Windows.
There should be APIs for every piece of hardware. Instead of people making like 900 open source linux calendars, make a fucking API!
Thanks,

If I promise to write crap for it?
I take my hat off to the VMLABS NUON team. NUON is extremely sophisticated processor, and the development environment is equally as attractive.
The concept of deploying NUON across multiple DVD OEM's is really fresh concept that clearly is proving itself successful.
Go guys!
