This is a flame and I make no apologies for it.
Gnome started for one reason and one reason only: RMS didn't agree with the KDE developers' interpretation of the GPL wrt the QT library. Gnome was set up with the intention of creating FUD to delay the uptake of the best thing to ever happen to desktop Linux and to bluff and bully the KDE crowd into getting the QT licencing changed.
Yes, you heard it right, Gnome was *deliberately* started to be "bickering, competing and incompatible" and to stop Linux having a single desktop standard if that standard was to be KDE.
The licence issue is *long* in the past. That out of the way, the Gnome crowd should have had to decency to either scrap Gnome completely (as did those working on the Harmony project, which was developing a GPL QT clone) so we could unite behind KDE or keep Gnome going as a low key longer-term hacker R&D project like Enlightenment. But no, we had to keep the ball rolling didn't we.
Why, given the adverse impact this has had on Linux and other target platforms?
NIH syndrome partly; a lot of big egos (many in the US) were beaten to the punch by a bunch of (mainly) German students.
And the fact that it relies on an existing library means that big egos who want to reinvent the universe can't develop their own object library; they have to do something useful.
But the main reason, irony of ironies, is that it is LGPL rather than KDE's GPL; yes folks, the desktop that began as *THE* GNU free desktop now boasts that it is more commercial-friendly. That's why Sun and HP are putting money into it. Guarantees success? Ah, look at CDE...
Gnome is an expensive, deliberately divisive vapourware project that should have been scrapped after the QT licence changes if the principals involved had any sense of decency or any *REAL* committment to free software. It continues because a bunch of pricks can't admit that they were wrong and continue to put their own giant egos ahead of the development of desktop Unix.
Meanwhile KDE continues to release in its usual methodical fashion while Gnome 2 stays as FUD. ("You may think KDE's kewl, but wait till you see Gnome 2!") Pardon me while I puke...
Gnome and the bastards who've hyped this piece of vapourware and tried to sabotage KDE for the last five years can go to Hell! Who needs Microsoft trying to pull the rug from under the free Unix's when you've got this lot! (Yes, that includes RMS, who is responsible for initiating and encouraging this debacle).

I think that the best way to use a wireless network is to merely use the WEP as a method to initially authenticate that users are allowed to connect to the wireless network.

I read the article and it missed several fundamental points.
1) SMS do not cost on average 30 cents USD. More like 10 cents EURO. This is by looking at the big carriers in Europe. But SMS is catching on because people thinking it is trendy and cool and IT KILLS TIME.
2) Imode is popular in Japan because of the problems with Internet in general. In Japan land lines are expensive and take a long time to get installed. now what happens within the next months with gnome?:
- a lot of users still use gnome 1 - maybe some of them move to gnome 2 completely
- or some run gnome 1 and gnome 2 because of old apps
- some are disapointed about gnome 2 because it don't offer anything new than only the plain port and move to KDE (the better solution)
- a lot of gnome 1 apps are not supported anymore so they wont be ported to gnome 2
- a lot of apps are gtk only apps that works under gnome but aren't seriously called gnome
- a lot of new incompatibility and instability (the circle won't close here)
now kde port to qt3 wich offer a nice database backend and for sure many applications are only ports to qt3 but if you look at the availability of productivity applications then its really far ahead of gnome.
konqueror is usable, also when browsing ftp sites, koffice is usable and feels complete (needs more development), science apps etc.

What still concerns me is that "Wireless == Cellphones" geez, this entire article was more about selling cellphones than wireless lans.
In reading this article, what I noticed first off was the complete non-mention of the 802.11g first draft. Basically 802.11g is the application of all the technology advances of a over b, but in 2.4gig and not 5gig. G was referred for a first draft by the IEEE at their Austin meeting. What spurned this on was the Chipset manufacturers were scared that Intel would push A and they would be out major R&D dollars on G.
And A is going to be a real real tough sell now, that G is on the horizon and will most likely be a firmware upgrade to the existing 2.4GHz radios, instead of a full truck roll out replacement.
Kim also fails to mention (could this be because they don't want to push a competing technology???) the development of WEP2 using AES. Most vendors are chomping on the bit to get a finalized standard for WEP using AES. In the meantime they're stuck using some sort of key rotation technology, which basically generates random WEP keys and changes the WEP key automatically every seconds. This technology was specifically designed into 802.1x, which is probably the best thing out there for Wireless lan security.
Until AES based WEP is deployed, 802.1x is the savior of wireless security. She doesn't mention the specs of it, but with 802.1x you get the WEP key rotation, MAC level authentication, smart card / certificate based authentication (or MD5 challenge username/passwords), all thru RADIUS. 802.1x pushes authentication before association, so one can't even associate with the AP unless they've authenticated first. Pretty nice.

Anywho... AT&T is currently in the process of a MAJOR 3G buildout/expansion. I am not sure what technology they are using for the 3G expansion, maybe someone else has more information on that. If memory serves me right they use IS-195 with is TDMA based on the voice side. It will also be interesting to see how they integrate that with the analog voice channels they have in the A and B cell bands.
Also I think Verizon is about to pop. They have been building a few new switches and I've heard rumors of a major buildout from the Midwest all the way to the West coast. It would not supprise me if they were also going to do an upgrade to 3G while they are at it, or that they might put 3G into their PCS bands they got through the merger. I would love to hear more.
I've also heard that Nextel and Cingular are about to also buildout. I've heard that Nextel is going to implement Wide CDMA with like 15khz of bandwidth... if this is true then it sounds kinda broken...

Judging by the number of comments on this story, I'd say it wasn't much of a year.
Check the developer manuals. Note, Handspring doesn't have very many devices with anything more than 3.1, and Sony has mostly 4.0 based devices, whereas Palm lingers between the two. Which one do you suppose will be mostly supporting bluetooth and WLAN cards?
