Ximian to bring Mono to Mac OS X
nunogawa writes "According to Think Secret, Miguel de Icaza said Ximian will probably be subcontracted to bring Mono (.NET support) to Mac OS X. The article mentions that de Icaza never mentions what company would hire Ximian to do this and surmises that Apple would be the likely candidate. On the other hand, I think Microsoft is another reasonable possibility."
Let's take a purely mathematical approach. Entropy S = k ln W where W is the mulitplicity of the configuration: W = N!/nl!nr!. Now, if we let N be the number of OSX machines in existence with nl = number that have been cracked and nr the number that haven't been (yet!), we can plug in some numbers and find that the likelihood of break-in is roughly 87.3%.
YMMV, obviously, but even in the case of simple home usage I don't like to risk my data to such an insecure OS. That's why I stick to Windows95 which, despite what some MS-bashers like to say, hasn't had a single break-in attributable to design error ever.
de Icaza wants to make fucking money -- dinero, l'argent liquide, cash. Whatever the fuck you want to call it. He's a businessman. And like clever businessmen who wish to remain clever businessman, the fucking guy will do fucking any fucking thing to make some money. If that means he sells his fucking shit to Apple, great. If he fucking sells his shit to some motherfucker at MS, great.
But in terms of the fucklings on slashdot, he is fucking satan (note, _fucking_ as a verb, not adj here) if he sell it to MS. And he is fucking God (note, again, a fucking verb, not adj) if he sells his shit to Apple. I don't fucking get it. Just let this motherfucker do his fucking business without being fucking demonized in the piss and moan linux press.
I've been an OSX user since January 2001 (all through public beta, 10.0, 10.1). I have yet to hear an explanation of .NET that makes it sound anything above and beyond Microsoft marketing schlock. Seriously. Can a Mac user who really cares about this explain why? I just don't get it.
"In one January report at ITworld.com, de Icaza said, "We're planning on supporting Mac OS X as soon as we're done with the Linux port."

I'd bet they'd be really receptive to a commercially-supported set of ports of the more common X-based tools.
There are already a couple X servers for Mac OS X. How much more would need to be done to see Ximian Red Carpet and the major components of Ximian Desktop up under Mac OS X?
I hope you don't work in software development or IT infrastructure. I'd hate to think that someone in such a vital position didn't know how to perform basic entropic security calculations or where to find the baseline data.
However, he didn't specify what company would hire Ximian. "I suppose he meant Apple," speculated one eyewitness...
.net? Why not wait for M$ to do it? Seems like they probably will, since they will probably need it for Office...
What a dumb idea. Apple has a healthy (ehem) relationship with M$. Why would they pay Ximian for a port of
What's more, Apple are dealing with the Java port in-house. It's not like they are lacking the expertise.
Finally, I would expect Apple to say something publicly if they were funding this. They would probably have to disclose it in their quarterlies anyway.
I, myself, could never justify installing the port on my computers (or any I maintain).
Aren't we all supposed to be minimizing potential vulnerabilities?
just my opinion.

Heh, can you say FLAMEBAIT? Just because someone decides not to install your preferred operating system on their hardware doesn't mean they want to fuck you up the ass.
I will now redundantly add my name to the end of my post. You know, in case you forgot me or something.
TROLL ?!?!?!?!? Whaddaya MEAN, TROLL ?!?!?!?
This was a sincere and honest attempt to communicate in an open and loving way with my fellow Slashdotters, and I get labeled TROLL ?!?!?
I am OUTRAGED. I demand a recount.

I'm not that worried about Mono efforts. I know this can be a great service, I just doubt MS has good intentions.
Nonetheless, Miguel is taking a shot in the dark. Luck for him and for us!
That said, it's a terrific move of Ximian to launch an OS X version. Great strategic thinking! Well done!
Let's hope I'm wrong and they're not wasting time and effort...
*I* don't thinks you're a troll, Mister Zoobie, sir. I think you'se a great man, an' someday I'm a gonna be jus' like you, cept all fuzzy onna de outside with watermelon shaped buttocks in da back.

It's more than likely that Microsoft and Apple will do the port together. MS is already porting to FreeBSD. The OS X port would likely be based on the same code, but optimized and complete with Forms.
