Translucent Red Apple iBook Custom Mod

Shouldn't this be called an iMod ... <groan>
Thoughts on tech, Software Engineering, and stuff
Given that the story submitter is obviously the guy who posted it on ebay.
Anyone want to buy a 'modded' 486.
By modded I mean completely destroyed and useless. I found it in the loft of a place I moved into, gutted it for parts and burnt the remains.

By "Anonymous Coward", you mean, the guy who is selling the thing on eBay? ;)
I thought I had filtered out the advertisements on slashdot...
I like the look of it, but I wouldn't want to run an Apple OS on it. If I bought it, I'd want to run Linux. How difficult is it to set Linux up on an iBook?
Well, its just a paint job. So why is this slashdot worthy? Maybe if he discussed the TYPE of paint used, as well as the process...
Why stick up for big business?

And here I thought my Mac was impervious to the "Code Red" virus. ::Off to buy some Anti-Virus software so I don't end up with a Red TiBook:::
Why is this news? It's been done before.
The original TronBook and it's first cousin
I agree with the Tom7's post, why is someone's eBay item advertisement news?

Uh the eBay auction says it is simply "red paint", I don't see how "amazing" simply dismantaling an iBook and painting the inside with red glass paint is really that impressive. I think the draw on this guys auction is the fact he is including a large amount of "pre-installed" high end software (looks like at least 5 or 6 thousand in software, if not more), not the custom paintjob.
I am confused? The Anonymous Coward link goes to the sellers email? Is this simply an shameless ad, if so why has it been posted?
i wish i could have this kind of publicity when selling my junk on ebay.
If you're going to call your own work "pretty incredible", you'd best remember to delete the e-mail address linking you to the work from the submission form...
Pretty shameless self-promotion.
Somebody using sleazy methods to sell their products that ISN'T Microsoft!
A thing is translucent when it merely admits the passage of light, without enabling us to distinguish the outline of objects through it; it is transparent when we can clearly discern objects placed on the other side of it. Glass, water, etc., are transparent; ground glass is translucent.
This case is transparent, not translucent. Details can be seen through it; the light is not diffused.
Hey, I'm going to add $50 worth a spray paint to my $800 used iBook and that will immediately warrant $400 over the value of a used 500MhZ iBook.

life is like a freeway, if you don't look you could miss it.
It's funny that someone would be stupid enough to post a story about their own auction, and funnier still that the moderators would post it.
What's not funny is that this guy is selling a bunch of "preinstalled" software with no CDs, which essentially is pirated software. I suspect that all of his serial numbers can be found in "Cracks & Numbers" or "Hackers Helper".
This guy might want to be careful lest he end up in jail for grand theft (the value of the software listed is several thousand dollars).

how much do you want to bet
Step 1: Mod your computer
Step 2: Put computer on eBay
Step 3 (THE MISSING LINK!): Post story to Slashdot
Step 4: Profit!
May we never see th

blaah !
As I see it... ./ when ./ thing is to put up stories without detailed investigation, but c'mon! This is insane!
A. This guy is just advertising on
B. This kind of thing has been done many times before (see other posts). And on top of all of that
C. He's including pirated "extra" software worth thousands of dollars.

The story itself is tragic. So is the computer. This looks just cheap. This is not beautiful, this is perverted. This is not about taste, it's ugly, period.
The auction ended early due to an error in the listing.
Alright who here emailed piracy@apple.com.
Who ever you are can burn in hell, I lost my chance to blackmail this guy and get an ibook for ten bucks.
>
He cancelled the auction then relisted it here minus the pirated software!

The current specimen is...kind of nice and translucent and red...like some sort of calcium-depleted hooker's nails. Two stars out of ten, and one of those is for being ballsy/stupid enough to "pre-install" a pile of software and advertise it here.
Note: the headline is wrong. All Apple laptops still have built-in ADB keyboards. Apple has no plans to rectify this problem. Read on to see why this deficiency reduces sales of Apple laptops to traditional unix users.
Apple laptops are effectively unusable for unix users.
I am a long-time Unix user. That means I need to have the Ctrl key to the left of the A key. This is a genuine need, not merely a want; it is based upon ergonomics. The Ctrl key is heavily used in unix, and it must be easily accessable. It cannot be off in the lower left corner of the keyboard where it is difficult to get at, and where it distorts the position of your left hand such that you can't easily type other keys while holding the Ctrl key down.
Apple desktop keyboards are now all USB. They are all OK. The CapsLock key can be re-mapped into a Ctrl key.
Unfortunately, even in this modern age, all Apple laptops have built-in ADB keyboards. The ADB keyboard is broken-by-design. It is, in general, not possible to remap the CapsLock key into a Ctrl key.
There are some exceptions, but they are horrible kludges. They are horrible kludges because the original design of the ADB keyboard was a horrible kludge. The correct solution would be for Apple to re-design their laptop motherboards to use built-in USB keyboards. This hasn't happened yet. If you run Linux, use Debian's solution. For Mac OS X users, uControl works. There are no solutions (that I know of) for either NetBSD or OpenBSD. Please note once again that the "solutions" above are in fact kludges, because of the original bad design of the ADB keyboard.
Apple is (currently) ignoring Unix users! This is not merely speculation on my part. In an on-going email exchange I am having with an Apple employee (whom I won't name) in their marketing department, the Apple marketing person directly stated to me that Apple was catering to their historic Mac customers, and is purposely ignoring the Unix market. He also claimed that Apple would soon start paying more attention to the Unix market. I won't hold my breath. Apple has been ignoring Unix users for more than 12 years. I expect that trend to continue. (Also note that my Apple contact indicated that Macs would never ship with a 3-button mouse, even though Apple intended to port almost all X-window software and deliver it either on a CD/DVD or installed directly on each Mac's hard drive. How Unix friendly is a 1-button mouse with X programs that often require 3 buttons?)
Apple has now lost two opportunities to sell me hardware. I really wanted an Apple laptop for their superior battery life, and for the PowerPC with Altivec CPU. (The Altivec is vastly superior to the x86 line for DSP.) Because I can't live with the broken-by-design built-in ADB keyboard in all Apple laptops, Sony and IBM sold me laptops instead. If Apple fixes this problem, they will sell me a PowerBook next year; if they don't, I'll still be running OpenBSD on x86 hardware, and wishing I could use a Mac.
He's pulled the first auction because of an 'error' in the listing, and relisted it without the 'preinstalled' software. Funnily enough though, he's also removed things like iSync that are free downloads anyway.
Slashdot should, perhaps, be renamed "macdoc" or something. This is fucking lame.
This is lame. The mod has been done before. The mod is boring. AND the story was submitted by the guy selling it on ebay. (emails match). /. = born yesterday, or what??

OR! you could remap the keys. WOW!
Even if I say something insightfull or inteligent, it doens't matter cause I'm an ass.
