LACNIC Is In Control In Latin America

nwetters writes "It seems to have slipped under everyone's radar, but today LACNIC, the fourth regional internet registry, will assume control of all IPv4 and IPv6 addresses in Latin America and the Caribbean (mostly in the 200/8 network). I doubt whether many people will even realize it's haappened, and it's unlikely that arin will effectively lose control until they republish their database on 1 December."

    Unfortunately, Latin America has become the new Far East, as far as spam sources are concerned. About three out of four spams are coming from open proxies within the 200/8 netblock, that's why more and more people are blocking it. You'll find about 5 or 10 proxies within each class C netblock.

    If LACNIC wants South America to be able to communicate with the rest of the world, they better have Embratel et al. fix their proxy problem or join China and Korea with their "spammy intranet"...

    ...this is somewhat old news by a couple three weeks anyways. I noticed this a while back while looking up IPs I suspected of being open relay/proxies or just generally borked. The ARIN registry referred me to LACNIC. This was at least a couple weeks back. I don't know much other than that.

    LACNIC, soon to be synonomous LAXNIC, shore for LAXATIVE-NIC, because a little spam goes in and a whole buttload of it comes out (with great force I might add).

    He's right. Virtually all of the attempts to send me Messenger service spam (damn you, I don't need a college diploma!) come from IPs in that block.
