Men Of Valor Site Launches

Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing out that developers 2015 (of Medal Of Honor:Allied Assault fame) have opened their official Men of Valor:Vietnam page on their site. It deals with the upcoming Vietnam-themed PC and Xbox FPS, which is running on a heavily modified Unreal engine, and showcases info and latest screenshots. The unofficial movv.com site has a little more info on this Sierra-published title, which looks to be one of the more eagerly-awaited FPSes of recent.

I don't care how heavily modified it is, I can't believe people are still using the Unreal Engine, what 6 years later? Or are they using the next engine up? Anyone on thoughts as to why they would use such an old engine?

The Unreal engine is what all the Unreal games use. They don't change the name of the engine even though its under constant development.

I wonder what the polygon count will be like...if they are going to simulate jungle terrain that means lots of trees, animals, and perhaps even warms of insects...lots and lots of small polygons, as far as the Z buffer can see...

I can forsee even a top notch video card crawling through this game.

Does "level of detail" tell you something? Billboards perhaps? Impostors? It's not like you render a fly 200 meters away with 1000 polygons. Your immediate environment will be rendered at high detail (low poly count thanks to texture trickery) with some particle system in charge of ground fog and light thru canopy kind of thing. Sounds like a fun project.

U1 or U2? U1 has an OpenGL renderer but doesn't employ the lastest buzzwords (foo-program et al). UT2k3 uses something like 0.25*U1 + 0.75*U2 from what I've read. Unreal ][ uses 1.0*U2, and does not seem to have an OpenGL renderer yet. Anyone in the loop care to comment?

However, aren't they late to the party with Vietcong, being on the market already? As for me, last night, I downloaded the Tour of Duty, Vietnam Halflife Mod, which should be good enough for me, if I can tweak my computer enough to get it running correctly.

If not, I'll have enough fun with the "Aliens versus Marines" Natural Selection Halflife Mod, I think. It runs really well on my machine and I think being an Alien is almost as much fun as being Charlie.
