Miner Willy's Mega-Tree Auctioned For Charity

Thanks to Blue's News for pointing to a Megatree Ltd. press release discussing the charity auctioning of the original development discs for Mega-Tree, the legendary, unfinished Commodore 64/Spectrum title that "was [to be] the third in a trilogy of games following 'Manic Miner' and 'Jet Set Willy'." The currently-in-progress Ebay auction, to benefit Cancer Research UK, has much more info and concept drawings of the game sometimes called Miner Willy Meets The Taxman by co-creator Matthew Smith, also noting that "The Atari hard disk containing more 'Mega-tree' graphics was 'lost' when it accidentally dropped off the back of Matthew's motorbike when he went through the Mersey tunnel."

I hope my disks sat readable for that long.

I've had floppies corrupt in the time it takes to walk across the room !

I still have some BBC games on cassette and disk.

Yeah, anybody bidding on them is taking a big risk if they are even going to load. After 20 years of sitting there, the chances of all the discs still working is slim, but you never know - a new of them might still be working.

Not to mention the funniest part:

I do not know what the contents of these disks are and cannot guarantee that they contain data from 'Mega-tree'

      Hmmm ya feeling lucky?

Get Manic Miner for Java enabled phones here or here. The Vodafone release has all 20 levels, the Orange version just has the first five.

Oh, and this charitable release from MegaTree appears to be more about self promotion rather than setting free the fabled sequel.

Talk about giving fans the chance to finish off where the developers left off. This is pretty darn neat, granted the disks still function, as they said, the disks may not even work after 20 years.

I'd LOVE to see this happen with Ultima 8's lost expansion (The Lost Vale). It would be soo neat if EA released the old code for that expansion since it never got completed, as the community would be far more than willing to complete it. Please EA? huh? huh? :)

Good article though. I got all the objects in the game (many years ago now) but still did not manage to complete it successfully (actually I'm not sure if I did or not: I remember my head being stuck down the toilet though). I dont know what the guy is going on about the Conservatory Roof tho, I never had any trouble getting up there.
